Hace una semana publiqué mi apreciación del primer episodio de What If...?, serie en la que se nos muestran historias alternas a la historia del UCM (Universo Cinematográfico de Marvel) y en la que conocimos en su primer episodio a la Capitana Carter, superheroína resultante de una realidad en la que Peggy Carter es quien recibe el suero del Supersoldado.
En este segundo episodio, tenemos una historia muy diferente a la anterior, principalmente inspirada en la trama y los elementos de las películas de los Guardianes de la Galaxia y Wakanda, pero con muchas libertades en su historia, pues en esta versión, Yondu no va personalmente a buscar a Peter Quill para Ego, sino que envía a sus hombres, quienes se equivocan y se llevan a T'Challa, quien acaba tomando el sendero que originalmente tomaría Quill, convirtiéndose en Star-Lord.
A week ago I posted my appreciation of the first episode of What If...?, a series that shows us alternate stories to the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) and in which we met in its first episode the Captain Carter, superheroine resulting from a reality in which Peggy Carter is the one who receives the Supersoldier serum.
In this second episode, we have a very different story from the previous one, mainly inspired by the plot and elements of the Guardians of the Galaxy and Wakanda movies, but with many liberties in its story, since in this version, Yondu does not personally go after Peter Quill for Ego, but sends his men, who make a mistake and take T'Challa, who ends up taking the path that Quill would originally take, becoming Star-Lord.
Un universo prácticamente desconocido
Si hay algo que puedo resaltar de este segundo episodio, es que cumple muy bien su función de ser el segundo paso dentro de este Multiverso de Marvel, pues a diferencia del primer episodio, que nos mostraba la posibilidad de una realidad muy ligada a la historia de las películas, el episodio de T'Challa nos muestra otro tipo de realidad alterna, en donde un simple desvío en la trama acaba formando una historia completamente diferente a la conocida.
El episodio no va de la mano de ninguna de las películas, tiene varios elementos notablemente sacados de la primera película de Guardians of the Galaxy, mas referencias a Black Panther y Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, sin embargo, éste agarra un rumbo diferente a cualquiera de esas tres películas. Finalmente, a pesar de tratarse de un universo basado en la saga que conocemos, acabamos sin realmente saber qué cosas realmente siguen siendo iguales, pues personajes que conocíamos, pueden estar muertos en esta realidad, pueden ser totalmente diferentes, pueden tener otro pasado o pueden ni siquiera ser mencionados.
A practically unknown universe
If there is something I can highlight about this second episode, is that it fulfills very well its function of being the second step within this Multiverse of Marvel, because unlike the first episode, which showed us the possibility of a reality closely linked to the stories of the movies, the episode of T'Challa shows us another kind of alternate reality, where a simple detour in the plot ends up forming a completely different story to the known one.
The episode doesn't go hand in hand with any of the movies, it has several elements notably taken from the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, plus references to Black Panther and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, however, this one takes a different direction than any of those three movies. Finally, despite being a universe based on the saga we know, we end up not really knowing what things really remain the same, as characters we knew may be dead in this reality, may be totally different, may have another past or may not even be mentioned.
Una historia simple pero divertida
La historia de este capítulo conecta menos con el espectador que la historia del romance de Peggy y Steve en el episodio anterior, así como tampoco resalta por un gran ingenio o profundidad detrás. Sin embargo, el episodio logra resultar un rato agradable por sus similitudes, diferencias y referencias a la historia original, así como el carisma de sus personajes y todo lo que les acontecerá.
A simple but fun plot
The story of this episode connects less with the viewer than the story of Peggy and Steve's romance in the previous episode, as well as it doesn't stand out for a great wit or depth behind it. However, the episode manages to be an enjoyable time because of its similarities, differences and references to the original story, as well as the charisma of its characters and everything that will happen to them.
El abuso de las casualidades
Si hay algo que me llegó a chocar un poco de este episodio, es lo inverosímil que su trama puede llegar a resultar. Uno como espectador es consciente de que ciertas casualidades pueden llegar a darse en estas historias para conectar diversos elementos, así como es sabido que las caricaturas pueden jugar de forma más extrema con esas casualidades, pero cuando la historia centra su peso en que los Ravagers se llevan por accidente a T'Challa en lugar de a Peter Quill, siendo éstos completamente diferentes y distantes, ahí la historia comete el error de centrarse en una posibilidad absurdamente imposible, pues que de los siete mil millones de habitantes de la Tierra, tomen justamente a Pantera Negra, es una casualidad demasiado extrema para mi gusto.
The abuse of coincidences
If there is something that I didn't really like about this episode, it is how implausible its plot can be. One as a viewer is aware that certain coincidences can come to occur in these stories to connect various elements, as well as it is known that the cartoons can play in a more extreme way with those coincidences, but when the story focuses its weight on the Ravagers accidentally taking T'Challa instead of Peter Quill, being these completely different and distant, there the story makes the mistake of focusing on an absurdly impossible possibility, because thinking that of the seven billion inhabitants of the Earth, they take just Black Panther, is a coincidence too exaggerated for my eyes.
