A pesar de que What If...? terminó hace varias semanas y yo no había publicado más reseñas sobre sus episodios, no quise dejar los capítulos finales sin reseñar, por lo tanto, aquí está mi reseña del séptimo episodio de la antología multiversal de Marvel, donde se nos plantea la pregunta, tanto en el título como en el inicio del episodio, ¿Qué pasaría si Thor fuera hijo único?
Even though What If...? ended some weeks ago and I hadn't posted any more reviews of its episodes, I didn't want to leave the final chapters unreviewed, so here is my review of the seventh episode of Marvel's multiversal anthology, where we are asked the question, both in the title and in the beginning of the episode, What if Thor was an only child?
Un mundo sin el dúo de hermanos...?
El detonante de este episodio es el momento en el que Odín encuentra a Loki en Jotunheim y, mientras en la saga principal lo llevaría a Asgard y lo criaría como su propio hijo, en esta realidad lo devuelve a su padre Laufey. Al ser Thor hijo único, toda su vida acaba siendo distinta hasta finalmente volverse alguien totalmente diferente al héroe que conocemos.
La idea en sí podría ser bastante interesante, pues podrías mostrar a un Thor incapaz de volverse el héroe que debería, debido a la ausencia de su medio hermano, mientras muestras por otro lado cómo sería el astuto Loki como heredero al trono de Jotunheim. ¿Cuál es el problema? Este episodio en realidad no busca mostrar ningún planteamiento interesante ni mostrar sólo una historia alterna, sino que usa su nuevo Thor para dar vida a una comedia totalmente diferente a todo lo mostrado previamente en What If...?.
Antes de este episodio, el capítulo más "cómico" de la serie había sido el episodio protagonizado por T'Challa como un Star-Lord. Sin embargo, a pesar de que el episodio también se tomaba libertades para hacer más divertidos los personajes y las situaciones, no llegó al nivel del nuevo episodio protagonizado por el dios del trueno, el cual rayó en el absurdo en infinidad de ocasiones sólo para contar la historia más vacía que tuvo esta serie.
A world without the brother duo...?
The trigger of this episode is the moment when Odin finds Loki in Jotunheim and, while in the main saga he would take him to Asgard and raise him as his own son, in this reality he returns him to his father Laufey. As Thor is an only child, his whole life ends up being different until he finally becomes someone totally different from the hero we know.
The idea itself could be quite interesting, as you could show a Thor unable to become the hero he should, due to the absence of his half-brother, while showing on the other hand how the cunning Loki would be as heir to the throne of Jotunheim. What's the problem? This episode doesn't really seek to show any interesting approach or show just an alternate history, but uses its new Thor to bring to life a comedy totally different from everything previously shown in What If...?.
Prior to this episode, the most "comedic" episode of the series had been the episode starring T'Challa as a Star-Lord. However, even though the episode also took liberties to make the characters and situations funnier, it did not reach the level of the new episode starring the god of thunder, which bordered on the absurd on countless occasions just to tell the most empty story this series ever had.
Party Thor
Los anteriores episodios de la serie nos mostraban universos que funcionaban mayormente igual que el universo de las películas, sólo modificados por algún suceso que cambiaría la realidad (La infección zombi, la muerte de Christine Palmer, el plan de Killmonger, etc.). El episodio de Thor, aunque pretende ser eso mismo, abusa de sus libertades y vuelve su universo un mundo completamente inimaginable para lo que venían siendo las historias de Marvel, con personajes completamente estupidificados y situaciones sin ningún sentido.
La ausencia de Loki en la vida de Thor, de alguna forma, convirtió al guerrero en un rumbero irresponsable con la mentalidad del típico adolescente cabeza hueca de las películas juveniles estadounidenses. Mientras tanto, Natalie Portman da voz a Jane Foster en una versión aún más superficial que la vista anteriormente, y es que mientras la película Thor del 2011 construía ese romance de forma que dos personajes tan diferentes pudieran conectar, este episodio simplemente hace que Jane se enamore perdidamente a punta de ojitos, músculos y la labia barata de un Thor ebrio chanceando.
El resto del episodio se centra en la fiesta que Thor trae a la Tierra, en la que se pueden ver como invitados a múltiples personajes del universo Marvel, aún si su presencia no tiene ningún sentido (Casos como Surtur, gran enemigo de Asgard que busca su destrucción mediante el Ragnarok según las profecías, pero que, tal parece, también disfruta de irse de fiesta con los asgardianos). Finalmente, la gran trama del episodio es mostrar cómo la Tierra busca frenar la invasión, mientras Thor evita que su mamá se entere de la fiesta.
Party Thor
The previous episodes of the series showed us universes that worked mostly the same as the universe of the movies, only modified by some event that would change reality (The zombie infection, Christine Palmer's death, the Killmonger's plan, etc.). The Thor episode, while pretending to be just that, abuses its liberties and turns its universe into a completely unimaginable world for what Marvel stories used to be, with completely stupid characters and situations without any sense.
The absence of Loki in Thor's life somehow turned the warrior into an irresponsible party boy with the mentality of the typical teenage airhead of American teen movies. Meanwhile, Natalie Portman voices Jane Foster in an even more superficial version than previously seen, and that is that while the 2011 Thor movie built that romance in a way that two such different characters could connect, this episode simply has Jane fall madly in love just from looks, muscles and the cheesy words of a drunkenly flirtatious Thor.
The rest of the episode focuses on the party that Thor brings to Earth, in which multiple characters from the Marvel universe can be seen as guests, even if their presence makes no sense (Cases like Surtur, great enemy of Asgard who seeks its destruction through Ragnarok according to the prophecies, but who, it seems, also enjoys partying with the Asgardians). Finally, the big plot of the episode is to show how Earth seeks to stop the invasion, while Thor keeps his mom from finding out about the party.
Una caricatura después de todo... ?
El episodio, como toda comedia, puede parecer más divertidos para unos que para otros, pues su humor es el típico humor infantil de las caricaturas para niños. Uno pudiera pensar que en realidad esto no está mal, al tratarse precisamente de una caricatura, pero hay un problema que interfiere con ese argumento y es que ésta no se trata de "una nueva caricatura" sino del séptimo episodio de una serie completa, que ya venía mostrando su narrativa y su humor.
Los primeros seis episodios de What If...? tuvieron muchas diferencias entre ellos, pero aún así, quedaba claro cuál era el público objetivo de esta serie. Historias profundas como la de Dr. Strange, historias macabras como el episodio de zombis, conflictos políticos como los del episodio de Killmonger, todas estas historias, más allá de ser buenas o malas, atraen principalmente un público con cierta madurez. En este sentido, el episodio de Thor acaba siendo un contraste intenso y, a mi parecer, decepcionante.
A cartoon after all.... ?
The episode, like any comedy, may seem funnier for some than for others, since its humor is the typical childish humor of children's cartoons. One might think that it is actually not bad, since it is precisely a cartoon, but there is a problem that interferes with that argument and that is that this is not "a new cartoon" but the seventh episode of a complete series, which had already been showing its narrative and its humor.
The first six episodes of What If...? had many differences between them, but even so, it was clear who the target audience of this series was. Deep stories like Dr. Strange, macabre stories like the zombie episode, political conflicts like those in the Killmonger episode, all of these stories, beyond being good or bad, appeal mainly to an audience with a certain maturity. In this sense, the Thor episode ends up being an intense and, in my opinion, disappointing contrast.
Conclusión
Puedo decir con toda seguridad que éste fue el episodio que menos disfruté de toda la serie, pues adicional a todo lo comentado antes, el episodio se siente como un relleno descarado para seguir explotando el material de las películas de Marvel.

I can easily say that this was the episode I enjoyed the least out of the entire series, as in addition to everything discussed above, the episode feels like blatant filler to further exploit material from the Marvel movies.

Oh no, suena bastante mal la verdad, es una pena que una idea tan interesante terminase siendo ejecutada así, yo estoy un poco quedado con los What if y tengo pocos incentivos para retomarlos, aunque el final me llama bastante la atención.
A mi también me atrajo la idea del gran crossover para terminar la temporada, tristemente el resultado se quedó corto. Al final la serie no es una que yo recomendaría, pero si decides terminarla, espero saber tu opinión!
