Hola Hivers amantes de las películas y series, regularmente reviso lo más nuevo en el catálogo de uno de los servicios de streaming más importantes del mundo del entretenimiento, me gusta analizar las nuevas películas dentro de este servicio y sobre todo expresar mi opinión personal de cada producción, en mi caso me gusta analizar más las películas que algunas series debido a que la limitación del tiempo juega un papel importante para el desarrollo de la historia que se cuenta en los largometrajes que tiene una duración de dos horas o quizás menos.
En este caso analizaré una película recién agregada al catálogo, quise darle la oportunidad a una película de terror llamada The Old Ways o en español Formas Antiguas, analizaré la producción, le otorgaré un puntaje y les comentaré desde mi punto de vista si vale la pena o no verla, ¡comencemos!
Esta es una película que cuenta con una duración de 90 minutos, a pesar de agregarse recientemente en el catálogo de Netflix es una producción que data del año 2020, es dirigida por Christopher Alender y cuenta con la actuación de Brigitte Kali Canales, Sal López, Julia Vera y Andrea Cortés.
Sinopsis:
Cristina, es una periodista nacida en México pero con la mayor parte de su vida viviendo en Estados Unidos, vuelve a su tierra natal, específicamente a Catemaco cuna de la brujería popular. Allí revivirá atemorizantes sucesos del pasado que generaron un espantoso trauma cuando era tan solo una niña, curanderos la mantienen en cautiverio por alguna razón, ellos pueden ver más allá de lo que comúnmente observamos y pueden sentir presencias demoniacas que se esconden en lugares sagrados.
Análisis de la Película
Historia
Creo que la historia a primera impresión es interesante, tanto la sinopsis como el tráiler nos invitan a ver una película dentro del subgénero del exorcismo, pero no es llevado a cabo con el típico sacerdote de la iglesia, sino que nos introducimos en un ritual donde se expone la cultura espiritual de una zona de México. En lo particular me agrada ver producciones que muestren de alguna manera otras culturas, darnos a conocer costumbres de otros sitios del mundo creo que es una apuesta importante para el mundo del cine.
A pesar de ser una película estadounidense está basada en la cultura mexicana, es algo que Netflix ha realizado bastante bien en cuanto a las producciones internacionales y en películas que muestren otras culturas alrededor del mundo.
Si en este escenario tenemos un exorcismo sumado a una muestra de rituales de curanderos como muestra de una cultura extranjera podemos tener una historia interesante a primera vista, esta fue la razón por la cual quise ver esta película el mismo día de su estreno en el catálogo.
Banda Sonora
La banda sonora juega un papel importante en las producciones que muestran una historia cultural, en este caso se hace la elección con música con ritmo latino me parece acertada, me gustó una escena donde se reproduce la canción “Llorona” me parece que le da un excelente ambiente lleno de misterio a esa escena en particular mostrando una canción bastante reconocida en toda Latinoamérica.
Espacio Cerrado
La película se desarrolla en un ambiente bastante cerrado y limitado, es una habitación en medio de la jungla, por lo cual la actuación, el juego de cámaras y el guion deben resaltar para mantener al espectador con el interés adecuado para seguir viendo la película, creo que a pesar de grandes esfuerzos como en fotografía, por momentos se siente que este espacio reducido algo aburrido y simple.
El Guion
La película nos presenta una trama bastante simple con muy pocas sorpresas lo cual interfiere con las emociones trasmitidas por la producción, a pesar de que la historia en un principio es interesante la producción no la aprovecha adecuadamente para conseguir una buena historia de terror. Esto lo vuelve una producción con un vacío notable en la hora y media de duración de la película.
Desde mi punto de vista el guion junto con la actuación deben sobresalir en las producciones de espacio cerrados en combinación a un buen juego de cámaras y fotografía, pero a mi juicio el guion se queda corto y la actuación si bien es correcta no es suficiente para tapar el vacío que deja la simplicidad del guion, quizás en otra época puede tener mejores críticas, sin embargo, en la actualidad se le exige mucho más a los productores por mejores películas con originalidad. Si bien esta película tiene un toque de personalidad al mostrar un exorcismo mediante una cultura extranjera desde mi punto de vista no termina de convencer.
Fotografía
Posiblemente el aspecto más positivo desde mi perspectiva, muestra muy buenas escenas en conjunto a juegos de cámaras con mucha calidad, los acercamientos y muchas vistas son muy buenas, esto ayuda al espectador a sumergirse en la historia y sentir que se encuentra en el lugar de los hechos. Aunque parezca un espacio común la fotografía puede hacer resaltar la escenografía y esto se hace de buena manera en esta producción.
La fotografía nos muestra un lugar simple, pequeño y escondido en la jungla, puede ser hermoso por el verde de las plantas pero al mismo tiempo bastante tenebroso con misterio oculto donde se trasmite la sensación de que allí ocurren hechos nada comunes de lo que estamos acostumbrados. A mi juicio este aspecto resaltante no es aprovechado de la mejor manera en esta producción.
Actuación
La actuación más significativa la realiza Brigitte Kali Canales como la protagonista de la producción, una actuación con diferentes facetas dentro de una evolución del personaje con cierta complejidad. A mi parecer el personaje de Cristina es algo tosco en un principio pero su evolución se muestra de buena manera. Desde mi punto de vista la actriz realiza un buen trabajo pero aun así no compensa los vacíos en el guion y en la historia.
Terror
Tal vez soy un poco exigente en cuanto a este género cinematográfico, sin embargo, pienso que no hay suficientes sustos en esta película, no hay un terror acompañado por un suspenso aplastante, sino que está limitado a los efectos de cámaras y sonido que si bien te pueden hacer saltar de la silla si tienes el volumen muy alto me parece insuficiente para lograr una buena producción del género de terror.
Efectos Visuales
Los efectos especiales son de buena calidad, no observaremos muchos a lo largo de la película pero tal vez no sea necesario para la historia en un espacio encerrado. Momentos observamos buenas escenas, algunas con pocos efectos pero bien aplicados, por otro lado al final de la película los efectos visuales son más notorios, desde mi perspectiva la producción posee buenos efectos visuales, los necesarios, sin embargo, no son tan impresionantes o en este caso tan atemorizantes para que la producción sobresalga.

Opinión Personal
La película presenta desde el inicio una trama simple con un ritmo lento para la introducción, ciertamente va de menos a más otorgando un poco más de emoción en el último tramo de la película, sin embargo, la falta de argumentos del guion y el vacío existente en la simplicidad de la trama hace que la película sea a mi perecer aburrida en gran parte de los minutos del rodaje.
Pienso que las historias simples pero bien ejecutadas pueden ser entretenidas, pero la ejecución en esta producción se queda corta y desaprovecha buenos aspectos como la fotografía y quizás limita la actuación de Brigitte Kali Canales que si bien hace un trabajo aceptable no es suficiente para hacer sobresalir la película.
A mi juicio el aspecto más negativo que posee esta producción es la narrativa, derrumbando una producción que a primera vista se torna interesante, sumando que los demás aspectos no son suficientes para entretener debidamente al espectador.
¿La Recomiendo?
Si busca una película de terror y suspenso, creo que es mejor ignorar esta producción, más aun si se busca una buena estructura narrativa. A mí me pareció aburrida en buena parte del tiempo teniendo en cuenta que los aspectos anteriormente mencionados a mi juicio no son suficientes para otorgar una buena experiencia. Esta película se la recomendaría solo a aquellas personas que sientan curiosidad en cuanto a la expresión cultural mostrada en la película, pero en general no la recomiendo.

In this case I will analyze a movie recently added to the catalog, I wanted to give a chance to a horror movie called The Old Ways, I will analyze the production, I will give it a score and I will comment from my point of view if it is worth watching or not, let's start!
This is a film that has a duration of 90 minutes, despite being added recently in the Netflix catalog is a production that dates from 2020, is directed by Christopher Alender and features the performance of Brigitte Kali Canales, Sal Lopez, Julia Vera and Andrea Cortes.

Story
I think the story at first impression is interesting, both the synopsis and the trailer invite us to see a film within the subgenre of exorcism, but it is not carried out with the typical priest of the church, but we are introduced to a ritual where the spiritual culture of an area of Mexico is exposed. In particular, I like to see productions that show in some way other cultures, I think it is an important bet for the world of cinema.
Despite being an American film based on Mexican culture, it is something that Netflix has done quite well in terms of international productions and films that show other cultures around the world.
If in this scenario we have an exorcism added to a sample of healer rituals as a sample of a foreign culture we can have an interesting story at first sight, this was the reason why I wanted to watch this movie the same day of its release in the catalog.
Soundtrack
The soundtrack plays an important role in productions that show a cultural history, in this case the choice is made with music with Latin rhythm seems to me right, I liked a scene where the song "Llorona" is played, it seems to me that it gives an excellent atmosphere full of mystery to that particular scene showing a song quite recognized throughout Latin America.
Enclosed Space
The film takes place in a rather closed and limited environment, it is a room in the middle of the jungle, so the acting, the game of cameras and the script must stand out to keep the viewer with the right interest to continue watching the film, I think that despite great efforts as in photography, at times it feels that this reduced space something boring and simple.
The Script
The film presents us with a fairly simple plot with very few surprises which interferes with the emotions conveyed by the production, although the story is interesting at first the production does not take advantage of it properly to get a good horror story. This makes it a production with a notable emptiness in the hour and a half of duration of the film.
From my point of view the script along with the acting should excel in closed space productions in combination with a good set of cameras and photography, but in my opinion the script falls short and the acting although it is correct is not enough to fill the void left by the simplicity of the script, perhaps in another era may have better reviews, however, today much more is demanded of producers for better films with originality. Although this film has a touch of personality by showing an exorcism through a foreign culture, from my point of view it is not convincing.
Photography
Possibly the most positive aspect from my perspective, it shows very good scenes in conjunction with high quality camerawork, close-ups and many views are very good, this helps the viewer to immerse themselves in the story and feel that they are in the place of the events. Although it may seem like a common space, photography can make the scenery stand out and this is done in a good way in this production.
The photography shows us a simple place, small and hidden in the jungle, it can be beautiful because of the green of the plants but at the same time quite dark with hidden mystery where it conveys the feeling that there occur events that are not common than what we are used to. In my opinion this highlighting aspect is not taken advantage of in the best way in this production.
Acting
The most significant performance is given by Brigitte Kali Canales as the protagonist of the production, a performance with different facets within an evolution of the character with a certain complexity. In my opinion, Cristina's character is a bit rough at the beginning but her evolution is shown in a good way. From my point of view the actress does a good job but still does not compensate for the gaps in the script and in the story.
Horror
Maybe I am a little demanding when it comes to this film genre, however, I think there are not enough scares in this movie, there is no terror accompanied by a crushing suspense, but it is limited to the camera and sound effects that although they can make you jump out of your chair if you have the volume too high I find insufficient to achieve a good production of the horror genre.
Visual Effects
The special effects are of good quality, we will not observe many throughout the film but perhaps it is not necessary for the story in an enclosed space. Moments we observe good scenes, some with few effects but well applied, on the other hand at the end of the film the visual effects are more noticeable, from my perspective the production has good visual effects, the necessary ones, however, they are not so impressive or in this case so frightening to make the production stand out.

Personal Opinion
The film presents from the beginning a simple plot with a slow pace for the introduction, it certainly goes from less to more granting a little more excitement in the last stretch of the film, however, the lack of plots in the script and the existing void in the simplicity of the plot makes the film to my perish boring in much of the minutes of the shooting.
I think that simple but well executed stories can be entertaining, but the execution in this production falls short and misses good aspects such as photography and perhaps limits the performance of Brigitte Kali Canales who although she does an acceptable job is not enough to make the film stand out.
In my opinion the most negative aspect of this production is the narrative, bringing down a production that at first glance looks interesting, adding that the other aspects are not enough to entertain the viewer properly.
Do I recommend it?
If you are looking for a horror and suspense movie, I think it is better to ignore this production, even more if you are looking for a good narrative structure. I found it boring for a good part of the time considering that the above mentioned aspects in my opinion are not enough to provide a good experience. I would recommend this film only to those who are curious about the cultural expression shown in the film, but in general I do not recommend it.
