When we hear the term “time travel”, we tend to associate it with film classics, such as “Back to the Future”, “Terminator” or, even, most recently, “Avengers Endgame”. And it is not a coincidence since it represents a universe of infinite possibilities; a clean slate, if you will. It is a chance of starting out from zero. Just think for a second how different our lives would be if we travel back in time to see “what it was”, or ahead in time, to finally have a glimpse of “what it will be”. Time travel is and will be perhaps an implausible scientific discovery (in the complexity of the multiverse theory), but it sure enthralls us in indescribable ways. Now, the problem with these films is that usually the main character travels in time to prevent an event from taking place and, thus, achieving the Shakespearian role of the hero of the story. But what happens when your life depends on it? When you do not have another choice? Well, that is exactly what “SOURCE CODE” tries to depict in its glory.
Cuando escuchamos el término "viaje en el tiempo", tendemos a asociarlo con clásicos del cine, como "Regreso al futuro", "Terminator" o, incluso, más recientemente, "El final de los Vengadores". Y no es una coincidencia, ya que representa un universo de infinitas posibilidades; una pizarra limpia, si se quiere. Es una oportunidad de empezar de cero. Piensa por un segundo en lo diferente que serían nuestras vidas si viajáramos atrás en el tiempo para ver "lo que fue", o adelante en el tiempo, para finalmente tener un vistazo de "lo que será". El viaje en el tiempo es y será quizás un descubrimiento científico inverosímil (en la complejidad de la teoría del multiverso), pero seguro que nos cautiva de maneras indescriptibles. Ahora bien, el problema de estas películas es que normalmente el protagonista viaja en el tiempo para evitar que un evento tenga lugar y, por lo tanto, lograr el papel Shakespeariano del héroe de la historia. ¿Pero qué sucede cuando tu vida depende de ello? ¿Cuando no tienes otra opción? Bueno, eso es exactamente lo que "OCHO MINUTOS ANTES DE MORIR" trata de representar en su gloria.
Jake Gyllenhaal delivers another astonishing performance, as per usual. He has had his fair share of time travel; if you do not believe me, ask Donnie Darko, the anti-hero that we did not know we needed, so evidently “SOURCE CODE” was a kid’s game for good old Jakey. It is somewhat obvious to say that it is a science fiction movie. Now, it is the story of a retired Army soldier, played by Gyllenhaal, that, after suffering a life changing accident, lost his four limbs and part of his abdomen. However, a secret intelligence organization tried to save his life by connecting his body to a capsule that, in one way or another, regenerated his vital signs; so, even though his body was completely dead, his mind was still alive. However, if they disconnected him, he would die. But every good deed has a cost, for this organization only wanted him alive in order to pull one last mission, considering his previous success in the Army. They had created a program named “SOURCE CODE”, that allowed people’s minds to travel back in time, to a specific moment, in order to stop an event from happening, while their bodies were still in the present, in the aforementioned capsule. So, these greedy individuals only wanted Gyllenhaal’s character to use the program in order to stop a train from exploding. His mission was clear: find the bomb, de-neutralize it and find the person involved with this genocide. But, here’s the catch: he only had eight minutes to solve this case; otherwise, the train would explode, and the mission would start all over again.
Jake Gyllenhaal ofrece otra asombrosa actuación, como de costumbre. Ha tenido su justa cuota de viajes en el tiempo; si no me creen, pregúntenle a Donnie Darko, el antihéroe que no sabíamos que necesitábamos, así que evidentemente “SOURCE CODE”, ―titulada "CÓDIGO FUENTE", en España y "OCHO MINUTOS ANTES DE MORIR” en Hispanoamérica, era un juego de niños para el bueno de Jakey. Es algo obvio decir que es una película de ciencia ficción. Ahora, es la historia de un soldado retirado del ejército, interpretado por Gyllenhaal, que, después de sufrir un accidente que le cambió la vida, perdió sus cuatro miembros y parte de su abdomen. Sin embargo, una organización secreta de inteligencia trató de salvarle la vida conectando su cuerpo a una cápsula que, de una forma u otra, regeneró sus signos vitales; así que, aunque su cuerpo estaba completamente muerto, su mente seguía viva. Sin embargo, si lo desconectaban, moriría. Pero toda buena acción tiene un costo, ya que esta organización sólo lo quería vivo para llevar a cabo una última misión, considerando su anterior éxito en el Ejército. Habían creado un programa llamado "CÓDIGO FUENTE", que permitía a las mentes de las personas viajar atrás en el tiempo, a un momento específico, con el fin de evitar que un evento ocurriera, mientras sus cuerpos estaban todavía en el presente, en la mencionada cápsula. Así, estos individuos codiciosos sólo querían que el personaje de Gyllenhaal usara el programa para evitar que un tren explotara. Su misión era clara: encontrar la bomba, desneutralizarla y encontrar a la persona involucrada en este genocidio. Pero, aquí está el truco: sólo tenía ocho minutos para resolver este caso; de lo contrario, el tren explotaría, y la misión comenzaría de nuevo.

It is fair to say that it was not easy for Jake’s character to pull this one off. To say his mission restarted too many times would oversimplify what happened. Nonetheless, as cliché and romantic as it may sound, he learned something new with every “reboot”, until finally he achieved his mission. The “SOURCE CODE” worked perfectly well, marking the beginning of an era of exploring new horizons in different timelines. At the end, Gyllenhaal decided to stay in that timeline, not returning to the present day. You see, every single time travel film has a point in common: redemption is imminent. And, even though the paroxystic entity of multiple dimensions is not well understood, it may be a reality that will be explored in a non-distant future. That is why these movies allow us to travel to other time periods - pun intended – and make us think of the choices we would make in those hypothetical scenarios. I only hope that, if I ever get to be in one of these situations, I may react as bravely as Jake Gyllenhaal did in “SOURCE CODE”, as Marty McFly did in “Back to the Future”, and as Tony Stark, Steve Rogers and Thor Odinson did in “Avengers Endgame”. As for now, I live in the 21st Century, in the year 2020. But who knows what will happen tomorrow? Maybe tomorrow is going to be yesterday, all due to time travel. So, universe, watch out, because here I come.
Es justo decir que no fue fácil para el personaje de Jake llevar a cabo esto. Decir que su misión se reinició demasiadas veces simplificaría demasiado lo que pasó. Sin embargo, por muy cliché y romántico que suene, aprendió algo nuevo con cada "reinicio", hasta que finalmente logró su misión. El "CÓDIGO FUENTE" funcionó perfectamente, marcando el comienzo de una era de exploración de nuevos horizontes en diferentes líneas de tiempo. Al final, Gyllenhaal decidió quedarse en esa línea de tiempo, sin volver al presente. Verán, todas las películas de viajes en el tiempo tienen un punto en común: la redención es inminente. Y, aunque la entidad paroxística de múltiples dimensiones no es bien entendida, puede ser una realidad que será explorada en un futuro no lejano. Por eso estas películas nos permiten viajar a otros períodos de tiempo - con un juego de palabras - y nos hacen pensar en las elecciones que haríamos en esos escenarios hipotéticos. Sólo espero que, si alguna vez llego a estar en una de estas situaciones, pueda reaccionar tan valientemente como lo hizo Jake Gyllenhaal en "SOURCE CODE", como lo hizo Marty McFly en "Back to the Future", y como lo hicieron Tony Stark, Steve Rogers y Thor Odinson en "Avengers Endgame". Por ahora, vivo en el siglo XXI, en el año 2020. ¿Pero quién sabe qué pasará mañana? Tal vez mañana sea ayer, todo debido a los viajes en el tiempo. Así que, universo, ten cuidado, porque aquí vengo.
