Té con Mussolini de Franco Zeffirelli / Tea with Mussolini by Franco Zeffirelli

Tea with Mussolini (1999) may not be a movie classic. Nor does it represent the best work of Zeffirelli, and even less a cinematographic work on the themes that he worked on auteur cinema.

Tea with Mussolini broke the Zeffirelli mold, and maybe an autobiographical film of great tenderness, love for the culture, art, and beauty of one of Italy's most emblematic regions.

This film, as I pointed out at the beginning, is not a masterpiece. However, the visual richness it boasts makes it an unforgettable film.

Zeffirelli gently shows us his memories.

Zeffirelli makes a wartime film in which he shows us how to survive the war in a very sentimental atmosphere.

Zeffirelli shows in his imperfections as a filmmaker that it is possible to make a moving film that leaves us with lessons to learn.

Tea with Mussolini may not be a film that will go down in the history of cinema, but it is the film of an old Florentine man who protects the art of the Tuscan city and presents black humor, British style, with a mixture of political parody.

I would like to highlight the performances of the British actresses and the American Cher who, from my point of view, they were at an excellent level.

I like to think that Franco Zeffirelli indulged in rescuing his childhood memories, with certain whimsicalities, in a statement of resistance through the pictorial frescoes and sculptures found throughout the city of Florence.

More love than the caresses of his stills, sometimes lacking in rhythm, is hard to find in other films that have also been shot in the city museum.

I think, finally, that Tea with Mussolini will remain in our memory because Zeffirelli found a way to imbue us with his heart.

As you say, it is not the filmmaker's best film, but it is a very personal film for him, and it portrays a lot of his childhood, it is an autobiographical production.
