La desalmada, un poco psicópata y obsesionada por la moda, Cruella De Vil, es una de mis villanas favoritas de Disney desde que tengo uso de razón y por tal motivo es que me emocioné tanto cuando, hace ya un buen tiempo, anunciaron que estaría en marcha una película sobre esta villana. Aunque, para serles sincera, traté de no crearme expectativas tan altas con esta película para no decepcionarme como lo hice con Maléfica.
Pero, ¿qué les puedo decir? Después de ver Cruella quedé completa y absolutamente maravillada...¡la película simplemente me encantó! y es por eso que decidí hacer una reseña aquí en mi Blog, pero tranquilos que esta será una reseña sin spoilers. Algo que sí debo dejar en claro desde un principio es que este no se trata de un Live-Action de 101 Dálmatas...¡no! Más bien es una precuela, aquí indagaremos un poco en los orígenes de esta villana tan particular, conoceremos su historia y comprenderemos el por qué de su personalidad tan...excéntrica.

The soulless, slightly psychopathic and fashion-obsessed Cruella De Vil is one of my favorite Disney villains for as long as I can remember and that's why I was so excited when, a while ago, they announced that a movie about this villain would be in the works. Although, to be honest, I tried not to get my expectations as high with this movie so I wouldn't be disappointed as I was with Maleficent.
But what can I tell you? After watching Cruella I was completely and absolutely amazed...I simply loved the movie! and that's why I decided to do a review here in my Blog, but rest assured that this will be a spoiler-free review. Something I must make clear from the beginning is that this is not a Live-Action of 101 Dalmatians...no! Rather it is a prequel, here we will dig a little into the origins of this particular villain, we will know her story and we will understand why her personality is so...eccentric.
La película toma lugar en el Londres de los años 70’s y narra la historia de Estella (Emma Stone), una joven huérfana bastante rebelde y con una creatividad, inteligencia y talento increíble para el diseño de modas pero que por obra del destino termina empleando sus habilidades para convertirse en una ladrona y estafadora junto con sus dos amigos: Gaspar y Horacio, pues este es el único camino que tienen para poder sobrevivir. Es esa misma pasión y habilidad que Estella posee por la moda la que la lleva a ser el foco de atención de La Baronesa (Emma Thompson), una mujer con mucho poder e influencia dentro del mundo de la moda, quien le brindará su oportunidad soñada a Estella, pero todo se termina viniendo abajo cuando la chica descubre el gran secreto que La Baronesa oculta y el cual hará que su verdadera personalidad, Cruella, salga del caparazón en busca de venganza y declarándole la guerra a La Baronesa.
Es aquí donde comienza una Guerra de Moda entre ambas y donde vemos esa evolución que va teniendo nuestro personaje principal hasta convertirse en una mujer vengativa que ama los escándalos y que no descansará hasta lograr que quiere, cueste lo que cueste.
The film takes place in London in the 70's and tells the story of Estella (Emma Stone), a rebellious young orphan with incredible creativity, intelligence and talent for fashion design, who by fate ends up using her skills to become a thief and swindler along with her two friends: Gaspar and Horatio, because this is the only way they have to survive. It is that same passion and ability that Estella has for fashion that leads her to be the focus of attention of The Baroness (Emma Thompson), a woman with great power and influence in the world of fashion, who will give Estella her dream opportunity, but everything ends up falling apart when the girl discovers the big secret that The Baroness hides and which will make her true personality, Cruella, come out of her shell in search of revenge and declaring war on The Baroness.
It is here where a "Fashion War" begins between the two and where we see the evolution of our main character until she becomes a vengeful woman who loves scandals and will not rest until she gets what she wants, whatever it takes.
Como mencioné al principio de esta publicación siempre traté de no crearme expectativas tan altas en torno a esta película, básicamente porque detesto cuando nos narran las historias de los villanos y nos hacen ver que no eran tan malvados, sino que más bien eran incomprendidos y, en ese mismo intento por victimizarlos, se va perdiendo un poco su esencia de villano desalmado, así tal cual como hicieron con Maléfica. Pero…¡vaya sorpresa la que me llevé cuando vi Cruella! A comparación de Maléfica, aquí no nos quisieron venir a cambiar la personalidad original de Estella/Cruella, simplemente no quisieron complacer a la audiencia moralista con un heroísmo absurdo y forzado.
El personaje, al igual que su cabello, tiene una parte luminosa y otra completamente oscura y misteriosa. De forma indirecta (desde mi perspectiva) se nos está planteando que ella puede que sufra de una especie de Trastorno Histriónico de la Personalidad pues Cruella siempre fue narcisista, rebelde, dominante, ambiciosa, sin escrúpulos y no se limitaba en absolutamente nada, siempre buscaba destacar y llamar la atención en los demás, pero resulta que esa parte oscura de su personalidad estuvo oculta durante un tiempo hasta que cierto detonante la hace despertar y es aquí donde comienza una lucha entre sus dos personalidades. Quizás esta transición que tiene nuestro personaje de Estella (su lado positivo) a Cruella (su lado negativo) es algo que muchas personas lo verán un poco forzado o tajante pero a mí realmente me encantó cómo es que manejaron esto y cómo lo justificaron, porque lo cierto es que desde que la película inicia se nos plantea la idea de que ambas personalidades siempre han coexistido pero son ciertos eventos “traumáticos” los que empujan a que una u otra tome el control absoluto…y si reflexionamos un poco, esto algo que no está tan alejado de la realidad, porque vamos a ser conscientes y sinceros, todos nosotros siempre tenemos un lado negativo y a veces ese lado sale a luz debido a cualquier circunstancia y nos termina dominando durante cierto lapso de tiempo.
As I mentioned at the beginning of this publication, I always tried not to create such high expectations around this movie, basically because I hate when they tell us the stories of the villains and make us see that they were not so evil, but rather misunderstood and, in that same attempt to victimize them, they lose a little bit their essence of heartless villain, just as they did with Maleficent. But...what a surprise I got when I saw Cruella! Compared to Maleficent, here they didn't want to change the original personality of Estella/Cruella, they simply didn't want to please the moralistic audience with an absurd and forced heroism.
The character, like her hair, has a bright side and a completely dark and mysterious side. Indirectly (from my perspective) it is being suggested that she may suffer from a kind of Histrionic Personality Disorder because Cruella was always narcissistic, rebellious, dominant, ambitious, unscrupulous and did not limit herself in absolutely nothing, always seeking to stand out and draw attention to herself and others, but it turns out that this dark part of her personality was hidden for a while until a certain trigger makes her wake up and this is where a struggle between her two personalities begins. Maybe this transition that our character has from Estella (her positive side) to Cruella (her negative side) is something that many people will see it a bit forced or blunt but I really loved how they handled this and how they justified it, because the truth is that since the film starts we are presented with the idea that both personalities have always coexisted but it is certain "traumatic" events that push one or the other to take absolute control... and if we reflect a little, this is something that is not so far from reality, because let's be conscious and sincere, all of us always have a negative side and sometimes that side comes to light due to any circumstance and ends up dominating us for a certain period of time.
Por otra parte, muchos también pensarán que a esta Cruella le hacía falta un poco más de malicia porque la verdad es que con esta cinta terminamos amando a esta villana y de cierta forma no nos transmite tanto miedo en comparación a la Cruella de la película animada y a la Cruella del Live-Action del año 1996 interpretada por la maravillosa Glenn Close, pero lo cierto es que aquí no deben existir comparaciones porque son versiones completamente diferentes por lo que debemos de tomar en cuenta que, en esta película del 2021, se nos muestra a una versión joven de Cruella que apenas se encuentra en sus inicios y no sabemos cómo es que ese lado negativo de ella la irá corrompiendo más y más hasta alcanzar esa versión tan despiadada que todos conocemos.
Para serles sincera yo amé esta película de inicio a fin y hasta el momento me ha parecido el mejor Live-Action de Disney, porque a diferencia de las otras películas de acción real que esta compañía nos ha mostrado durante los últimos años, esta no es un remake directo de la película original donde vemos por primera vez a esta villana y esto es algo que juega bastante a favor porque al no conocer absolutamente nada sobre los orígenes de Cruella es más sencillo poder dibujar su historia previa y explorar aún más a fondo en este personaje.
On the other hand, many will also think that this Cruella needed a little more malice because the truth is that with this movie we ended up loving this villain and in a way she doesn't transmit us so much fear compared to the Cruella of the animated movie and the Cruella of the Live-Action of 1996 played by the wonderful Glenn Close, but the truth is that here there should be no comparisons because they are completely different versions so we must take into account that, in this 2021 movie, we are shown a young version of Cruella who is just in her beginnings and we do not know how that negative side of her will corrupt her more and more until she reaches that so ruthless version that we all know.
To be honest, I loved this movie from beginning to end and so far it has seemed to me the best Disney Live-Action, because unlike the other live-action movies that this company has shown us during the last years, this is not a direct remake of the original movie where we see for the first time this villain and this is something that plays quite in favor because when we know absolutely nothing about the origins of Cruella it is easier to draw her previous history and explore even more in depth in this character.

Esta actriz es una de mis favoritas y ha realizado muy buenas interpretaciones a lo largo de su carrera, pero a mi juicio finalmente logró dar con ese personaje que la marcará de por vida. Todos los actores y actrices legendarios han interpretado a ese personaje que es como el definitivo, el mejor de sus carreras, y en lo personal opino que Cruella es ese personaje TOP en la carrera de Emma Stone. Ella logró capturar completamente, la esencia, la excentricidad de esta villana dando como resultado una gran interpretación de Cruella / Estella, ambos papeles, tanto el de Estella como el de su alter ego Cruella los supo trabajar de manera ÚNICA y por un momento, uno como espectador, los siente como si fuesen dos personas distintas.
This actress is one of my favorites and has done very good performances throughout her career, but in my opinion she finally managed to find that character that will mark her for life. All the legendary actors and actresses have played that character that is like the definitive, the best of their careers, and personally I think that Cruella is the TOP character in Emma Stone's career. Claramente yo no sé mucho acerca de moda, pero hay algo que no se puede negar y es el trabajo de vestuario y de maquillaje tan impresionante que hay en cada uno de los outfits tanto de nuestra protagonista, como los de La Baronesa. Algo que me hizo enamorarme en lo absoluto de esta película es que esta versión de la Cruella joven es mucho más punk y gótica, cada cada uno de sus vestuarios están llenos de rebeldía y cortes atrevidos, además su paleta de colores está basada en sólo tres tonos: blanco, negro y rojo. Un dato curioso es que Jenny Beavan (Diseñadora de Vestuario) y su equipo crearon 80 atuendos en total para los personajes de Cruella y La Baronesa.
Clearly I don't know much about fashion, but there is one thing that can't be denied and that is the stunning wardrobe and makeup work that goes into each of the outfits of both our protagonist and The Baroness. Something that made me fall in love with this movie is that this version of the young Cruella is much more punk and gothic, each of her costumes are full of rebellion and daring cuts, plus her color palette is based on only three shades: white, black and red. A curious fact is that Jenny Beavan (Costume Designer) and her team created 80 outfits in total for the characters of Cruella and The Baroness.

Pero si bien amé el soundtrack me encantó en ocasiones me pareció que abusaban un poco de él y a veces sentí que el apoyo de la música robaba protagonismo de la puesta en escena.
The soundtrack is a complete explosion of the emerging punk rock of the 70's made up of some iconic band hits. Among the many songs we can listen to here are: "One Way or Another" by Blondie, "Five to One" by The Doors, "Stone Cold Crazy" by Queen, among others. But while I loved the soundtrack, I loved it, at times I felt that it was a little overused and sometimes I felt that the support of the music stole the spotlight from the staging.
Me agradó que, la mayoría de los eventos, tuviera un por qué bastante coherente detrás, es decir, el hecho de por qué ella es cómo es, su origen, sus influencias, su pasión y amor por la moda e incluso su odio hacia los Dálmatas todo me pareció que estaba bien justificado.
I was pleased that, for most of the events, she had a fairly coherent why behind it, i.e. the fact why she is the way she is, her background, her influences, her passion and love for fashion and even her hatred of the Dalmatians all seemed to me to be well justified.
Esta película para mí fue un deleite visual, tanto que ya la he visto dos veces desde que se estrenó hace una semana, y esto no sólo lo digo porque la trama se desarrolla dentro del mundo de la moda y el arte, sino porque también posee esa magia que logra que ciertos momentos a lo largo de la película se queden grabados en tu memoria, cosa que desde hace tiempo no me había ocurrido con las películas de Disney.
This movie was a visual delight for me, so much so that I have already seen it twice since it was released a week ago, and I say this not only because the plot is developed within the world of fashion and art, but also because it has that magic that makes certain moments throughout the film remain etched in your memory, something that had not happened to me for a long time with Disney movies.
Pero bueno amigos, en la vida no todo es perfecto así que debo ser completamente transparente y admitir lo que no me gustó de la película...aunque realmente fue solo una cosa. Esta cinta tiene una escena post-créditos que realmente me pareció completa y absolutamente innecesaria porque, además de dejar al espectador un poco confundido, termina empujando por un acantilado todo lo genial e increíblemente estructurada que estuvo la película. Todo fue muy bien contado, pero al ver esta escena todo se contradice y deja de encajar con la historia que acabamos de ver.
But well folks, not everything in life is perfect so I have to be completely transparent and admit what I didn't like about the movie...even though it was really just one thing. This film has a post-credits scene that I really found completely and utterly unnecessary because, in addition to leaving the viewer a bit confused, it ends up pushing everything that was great and incredibly structured about the film off a cliff. Everything was very well told, but watching this scene everything contradicts itself and stops fitting with the story we just saw.

Sin duda, esta cinta logra convertir a esta villana en un personaje aún mas emblemático con mucha más personalidad y con una historia de origen INCREÍBLE, muy bien planteada y que logra desarrollar completamente a su personaje. Hasta el momento, al menos para mí, ha sido el mejor Live-Action de Disney y que la hacen destacar muy por encima de otras gracias al glamour, su gran estilo visual, su fantástica banda sonora y que, sin duda, posiciona a la bellísima y talentosa Emma Stone como Cruella en una de las mejores villanas de Disney.

Undoubtedly, this film manages to turn this villain into an even more emblematic character with much more personality and with an INCREDIBLE origin story, very well thought out and that manages to fully develop her character. So far, at least for me, it has been the best Disney Live-Action and that makes it stand out far above others thanks to its glamour, its great visual style, its fantastic soundtrack and that, undoubtedly, positions the beautiful and talented Emma Stone as Cruella in one of the best Disney villains.
You have to see this movie, because I assure you that you will enjoy it!
