Hace apenas tres días publiqué un artículo (que lamentablemente hasta ahora ha pasado desapercibido para los curadores) sobre la serie live action de Netflix titulada Altered Carbon, cuya narrativa cuenta una historia de tipo ciberpunk con aspectos filosóficos bastante profundos y que en el momento de su estreno pretendía convertirse en el equivalente de Blade Runner en formato televisivo, lo cual quizá consiguió en alguna medida. Esa publicación contiene una descripción suficientemente completa y profunda, creo yo, de la argumentación en que se fundamentan la trama, por lo que en esta oportunidad solo hare un repaso breve sobre ello, pidiéndole a quien me lee, que si aún no ha visitado esa entrada y le interesa conocer mejor tales detalles, por favor has clic este enlace para ir a ese post.
Ahora para expandir un poco más el tema referente a la saga Altered Carbon, hablare sobre la película de animación 3D y apariencia de anime del año 2020, que tiene una duración de tan solo 74 minutos (una hora y cuarto) y es un spin-off directo de la serie original en acción real estrenada en 2018. Esta ha sido titulada Altered Carbon: Reenfundados. Es una secuela de la primera temporada de la serie, pero una precuela de la segunda, ya que tiene lugar en el año siguiente a lo ocurrido en la primera.
En lo personal, soy muy fanático de la animación 3D y tratándose de una historia del género ciberpunk no podía dejar de verla. Primeramente debo decir, que esta significa un cambio considerable en el ritmo e incluso el tono de la narración con respecto a la serie, ya que en este caso la obra no se regodea en elementos filosóficos, sino que otorga absoluta prioridad a la acción por encima de las explicaciones acerca de la sociedad en que se desarrollan los hechos, centrándose en una trama bastante simple y lineal, a la vez que interesante y entretenida, que a mí me gusto bastante.
Just three days ago I published an article (which unfortunately has so far gone unnoticed by curators) about the Netflix live action series Altered Carbon, whose narrative tells a cyberpunk-type story with quite deep philosophical aspects and that at the time of its premiere was intended to become the equivalent of Blade Runner in television format, which perhaps it succeeded to some extent. Now to expand a little more on the topic regarding the Altered Carbon saga, I will talk about the 3D animation film and anime appearance of the year 2020, which lasts only 74 minutes (one hour and a quarter) and is a spin- direct off of the original series in real action released in 2018. This one has been titled Altered Carbon: Re-holstered. It is a sequel to the first season of the series, but a prequel to the second, since it takes place in the year following what happened in the first.
Personally, I am a huge fan of 3D animation and being a story of the cyberpunk genre I couldn't stop watching it. First of all, I must say that this means a considerable change in the rhythm and even the tone of the narration with respect to the series, since in this case the work does not revel in philosophical elements, but gives absolute priority to action over of the explanations about the society in which the events take place, focusing on a fairly simple and linear plot, as well as interesting and entertaining, which I liked a lot.
Al comenzar a disfrutar de esta película, salta a la vista que se trata de un tipo de animación conocido como sombreado plano (cel shading o toon shading), debido a que es realmente generada en 3D, pero mediante a la incorporación de líneas en los bordes de los modelos, se consigue simular una apariencia 2D. La calidad de la animación es alta, aunque debido al tipo de CGI utilizado, puede no ser del gusto de algunos que prefieren el anime 2D tradicional. Esta técnica se emplea regularmente para agilizar la producción y reducir costos en detrimento de la fluidez y vistosidad de los gráficos, en comparación con acabados que requieren mayor derroche de recursos. No obstante, este largometraje muestra secuencias de acción muy fluidas y dinámicas, además tiene una estética bastante cuidada en su estilo y sus escenarios, que en conjunto con la música hacen un claro homenaje a producciones clásica de la ciencia ficción japonesas como Akira y Ghost in the shell.
En cuanto al contexto que envuelve a la historia central, en resumidas cuentas, se trata de un mundo en el que la humanidad ha alcanzado un gran avance tecnológico, ha llegado a poblar varios planetas más allá de La Tierra y la vida humana se ha vuelto virtualmente interminable, ya que en el cuello de las personas se inserta un dispositivo capaz de almacenar todos los recuerdos y la configuración psico-neural del individuo, de modo que, al morir el cuerpo físico de una persona, este puede ser reemplazado, trasladando ese dispositivo llamado Pila a otra Funda, como se le conoce a los cuerpos.
En ese ambiente, es nuevamente reenfundado el protagonista de toda la saga, Takeshi Kovacs, esta vez por la intervención de Hideki Tanaseda, uno de los fundadores de Harlan’s World (el planeta natal de Takeshi) y antiguo conocido suyo, que le encomienda la tarea de dilucidar la muerte de su hermano, quien era el líder de un sindicato Yakuza y que murió como parte de un ritual de sucesión de poder, llevado a cabo por el clan Mizumoto, el mismo para el que trabaja una aparentemente joven tatuadora llamada Holly Togram. Por lo tanto, Kovacs debe proteger a esta chica cuando es perseguida por ninjas que intentan eliminarla, debido a que ella forma parte fundamental de la ceremonia y posee información privilegiada al respecto.
When you start to enjoy this movie, it is obvious that it is a type of animation known as flat shading (cel shading or toon shading), because it is actually generated in 3D, but by incorporating lines in the edges of the models, it is possible to simulate a 2D appearance. The quality of the animation is high, although due to the type of CGI used, it may not be to the taste of some who prefer traditional 2D anime. This technique is used regularly to speed up production and reduce costs at the expense of the fluidity and attractiveness of the graphics, compared to finishes that require more waste of resources. However, this feature film shows very fluid and dynamic action sequences, it also has a fairly careful aesthetic in its style and its settings, which together with the music make a clear tribute to classic Japanese science fiction productions such as Akira and Ghost in the shell.
As for the context that surrounds the central story, in short, it is a world in which humanity has reached a great technological advance, has come to populate several planets beyond Earth and human life has become virtually endless, since a device capable of storing all the memories and the psycho-neural configuration of the individual is inserted in the neck of the person, so that, when the physical body of a person dies, it can be replaced, moving that device called Stack to Another Sheath, as bodies are known.
In that environment, the protagonist of the entire saga, Takeshi Kovacs, is once again re-sheathed, this time by the intervention of Hideki Tanaseda, one of the founders of Harlan's World (Takeshi's home planet) and his former acquaintance, who entrusts him with the task to elucidate the death of his brother, who was the leader of a Yakuza union and who died as part of a ritual of succession of power, carried out by the Mizumoto clan, the same one for which an apparently young tattoo artist named Holly Togram works . Therefore, Kovacs must protect this girl when she is chased by ninjas who try to eliminate her from her, because she is a fundamental part of the ceremony and has inside information about it.
A la misión se le une una mujer cuyo nombre clave es Gina y que forma parte de la CTAC, la fuerza militar antiterrorista del protectorado, una especie de gobierno multi-planetario que lo controla todo. Ella tiene ordenes de infiltrarse en el clan Mizumoto, así que se alía a Takeshi y juntos se convierten en los guardaespaldas de Holly.
Si bien el film no se toma el tiempo para explicar todo aquello de las Pilas y las Fundas, es posible disfrutarlo incluso sin haber visto la serie, por lo tanto, recomiendo ver Altered Carbon: Reenfundados a cualquiera que le guste el anime y la ciencia ficción. Quizá pudiera haber sido mejor que se hubiera hecho con ese material una mini-serie que se tomara un poco más de tiempo para explicar algunas cosas, sin embargo, a mi habiendo visto previamente la serie, no me molesta para nada su ritmo acelerado.
La película está llena de acción, peleas brutales y derramamiento de sangre, así como unos cuantos giros que le conceden cierta emoción e intriga a la trama. Aunque como dije antes no pretende enfatizar los conflictos filosóficos que se plantean en la primera temporada de la serie, también es cierto que de forma sutil aborda superficialmente esas ideas ciberexistencialistas, dejando en el aire y de forma casi velada, interrogantes que giran en torno a la continuidad de la vida humana mediante el respaldo artificial de su conciencia.
The mission is joined by a woman whose code name is Gina and who is part of the CTAC, the protectorate's military antiterrorist force, a kind of multi-planetary government that controls everything. She has orders to infiltrate the Mizumoto clan, so she teams up with Takeshi and together they become Holly's bodyguards.
Although the film does not take the time to explain all that of the Batteries and Cases, it is possible to enjoy it even without having seen the series, therefore, I recommend watching Altered Carbon: Re-sheathed to anyone who likes anime and science fiction. Perhaps it could have been better if a mini-series had been made with that material that took a little more time to explain some things, however, having previously seen the series, its accelerated pace does not bother me at all.
The film is packed with action, brutal fighting and bloodshed, as well as a few twists that lend a certain thrill and intrigue to the plot. Although, as I said before, it does not intend to emphasize the philosophical conflicts that arise in the first season of the series, it is also true that in a subtle way it superficially addresses those cyber-existentialist ideas, leaving in the air and in an almost veiled way, questions that revolve around the continuity of human life through the artificial support of his consciousness.

Esta serie me pareció un excelente spin off de la serie Altered Carbon. Me encanta como pusieron el mundo cyberpunk animado, y de hecho, creo que los creadores de esta serie están trabajando en la serie animada del juego Cyberpunk 2077 también para Netflix. Altered Carbon es un universo con muchas posibilidades y a la espera estoy de que lo sigan desarrollando con nuevas temporadas.
