Coming to Netflix in August

in Movies & TV Shows3 years ago

Unfortunately, August 1st seems as though it is going to be a bit of a dead date for 2021 and I am not very excited about most of what is coming. However, there are a few that I consider to be gems and if you haven't seen them I think you should.

While I am not generally a fan of Leo films because I think that for the most part the movies he is in are good in spite of him not because of him. For most of his films I think that they would have been a little bit better if they were Matt Damon movies instead. There is an exception every now and then though and I feel that Leo was actually perfect for this role. His small stature and boyish looks are perfect for the con-artist role and the father-figure role Tom Hanks is actually ideal as well. There is also a bit role for Christopher Walken and that is always a treat. This comes to Netflix on August 1st and if you haven't seen it, you really should.

Before anyone gets excited I want you to understand why I put this on my list. I do NOT consider this to be a great film but many film historians consider this movie to be one of the best films of the 80's. While I find it entertaining to a certain degree I think that this attribute of being one of the "best" of the 1980's is just a farce. There were so many groundbreaking films in the 80s as technology improved at a rapid pace and I do not think this is one of the better ones. Watch it and see if you agree with me or not.

While certainly not his his best work, Christian Bale lost so much weight for this role that he doesn't even look like himself. He looks like he is near death and it is just astounding to think that he bulked back up for Batman Begins immediately after this. Despite blowing everyone's minds with his body transformation this film was a box-office failure and that is a damn shame because it is actually a pretty awesome psychological thriller.

The cast is absolutely loaded in this one: Tom Cruise, Philip Seymour Hoffman, William H. Macy, Julianne Moore, John C. Reiley, and Felicity Huffman do anything for you? Well that is just a piece of the big names in this. You will recognize one superstar after another and it kind of makes you think that it is a bit unbelievable that they were able to make this film for a mere $35 million when you consider that just the paychecks for the stars mush have been massive.

This incredible story is actually a half-dozen stories intermingled into one and it doesn't even seem as though the stories are related... until it is revealed that they are just like in Love Actually or Traffic. It too was a box-office failure and I really can't understand that because this is one of the best films of the 2000's in my opinion and it was nominated for 3 Academy Awards and 2 Golden Globes. In both of these ceremonies Tom Cruise was nominated for Best Actor - which is extremely rare for the action star.

What do you do when you have made a bazillion dollars with your smash hit SouthPark? Well you do something that nobody has tried in a hundred years and you make a full-length film using puppets. By the time they were finished with this Stone and Parker vowed to never do a film together again and to never use puppets in anything in their lives.

"I don't know why we thought doing a puppet movie would be fun because it was terrible. It was really hard because they can't do anything at all."

Once again this movie failed to turn a decent profit at cinemas and this was due partially to it being banned in many parts of the world and barely got away with an "R" rating. If you see the director's cut, which almost certainly will not be what is on Netflix because it's basically porn with puppets, you'll understand why they had to cut a lot of the film out to get it in theaters at all.

Others of note but not worth their own section

  • Seabiscuit - Tobey Maguire in a movie about a famous race horse that actually managed to be good? Yeah, that's what this is
  • The Lincoln Lawyer - Matthew McConaughey does an excellent job in one of his first non romantic comedy films and this might have been instrumental in him changing the trajectory of his career which would later result in him winning an Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club... who knows, if director Brad Furman thought he was taking a gamble on casting Matt in a serious role, it certainly paid off. Excellent film.

All of these films and many more will be on Netflix in most markets globally beginning on August 1st.

What great classics are coming soon on Netflix🔥

Oh ! I'll finally see the machinist !! !PIZZA

I actually saw the movie for the first time when I found the DVD somewhere. It didn't have Bale's name on the disc and I wasn't paying attention during the opening credits. The whole time he is on screen i was thinking "this guy looks like someone I know" and I was just astounded when I found out it was him.

Yeah, he's unrecognizable !!
