Hello once again movie lovers!
This time I have a review for The Orphanage, a 2008 movie written by Sergio G. Sánchez, directed by J.A. Bayona and produced by Guillermo del Toro.

Starring Belén Rueda, Fernando Cayo, Roger Príncep and Oscar Casas.

The Plot

Laura (Belén Rueda) was a girl that lived in an Orphanage along with other kids that were her friends, she was adopted and kept good memories of her time in the orphanage.

As an adult she returns to the property after having purchased the huge house by the sea, from where a lighthouse can be seen through its windows. Laura, her husband Carlos (Fernando Cayo) and their son Simon (Roger Príncep) plan to open again the Orphanage taking care of some kids and giving them a nice place to live.

image.png

However, that orphanage isn't as nice as Laura remembers, it holds a tragic story and if walls could talk, those walls would have a lot of things to say.

While they get used to their new home, Laura and Carlos deal with Simon who always plays with imaginary friends. During a visit to the beach so Simon could meet the place, he befriends a new friend who Laura can't see. Simon meets him when he enters a cave at the beach, Laura leaves him alone inside, what kind of mother leaves her child explore alone a dark cave?

When they come back, Simon is leaving a sea shell trail so his new friend can follow him home and play together.

image.png

The quietness of the place starts to be altered, Simon starts to have more invisible friends, as he calls them, one of those friends is Tomas (Oscar Casas), the friend he met at the beach.

Playing treasure hunt with Tomas, Simon and his mom search the rooms looking for clues, Laura can't explain how her son has access to places and information he isn't supposed to know. Laura asks Simon how does he placed all the clues, Simon says it was Tomas and because of this he's accused of being a liar. Hurt because his mom doesn't believe him, Simon says she's the liar that never told him she isn't his real mom. That's right, Simon is adopted and now he knows it.

Short time later, the family welcomes several kids to know the place and for their tutors to decide if they leave them take care of the children, everyone's having fun playing with masks, so Laura goes for Simon to meet and play with the kids but the little one first wants to sow her Tomas's little house, Laura refuses and this upsets Simon to the point of having a tantrum and Laura leaves him alone until he calms down.

Laura and Carlos play with the kids and when Laura goes back to get Simon she can't find him anywhere, she only sees a kid wearing the old Orphanage's uniform and a mask over his face. That mysterious kid locks Laura in a bathroom and after that she doesn't see him again, and when she asks the persons in the party about him it turns out no one saw a kid matching that description.

image.png

They keep unsuccessfully looking for Simon that whole day, they even search for him in a small closet under the stairs but there's only huge metal pipes, frustrated Laura pushes the pipes inside and keeps searching.

At night Laura can't sleep due to concern, she hears a noise and a thud that seems to come from inside the walls but she can't find the cause of it.

After that day Simon was never seen again by anyone, six months go by and during that time the parents do everything they can to find him, they get suspicious of a woman that was seen in the property looking for something, that woman's name is Benigna and after investigating her they find out she was a care taker in the orphanage shortly after Laura was adopted years ago, one day they see her on the street and want to confront her but unexpectedly she dies in a sudden and not nice way.

Benigna had a son, Tomas, who due to a face malformation he always wore a mask to hide himself.

The other kids, playing a prank on him, took Tomas to the cave at the beach and took off his mask to dare him to come out without it... Tomas never came out in spite that when the tide rises the cave gets underwater.

His body was found the next day.

Laura relates this story with Simon's new invisible friend, the one he met in that same cave, she gets in touch with a Medium and during a session, the Medium and her team record several children's voices, the medium claims she sees them all in bad condition, those kids tell her they were poisoned.

image.png

Laura doesn't lose hope of finding her son and to that she decides to accept the fact that Tomas is real and present, so she starts to follow clues to play treasure hunt, and according to game's rules, the one who finds the treasure earns a wish.

Carlos thinks is better for both to leave that place, Laura asks him for two days of staying there alone to say goodbye to all the memories, is during those couple of days that Laura plays treasure hunt and in her quest she finds more Benigna's secrets.

After finding out about the kids's prank to her son Tomas, Benigna poisoned them all and hide their bodies which were found by Laura in her treasure hunt years later, she is very hurtful of finding out her friends never were adopted and never left that place, it were their voices the ones that could be hear in the investigators equipment.

The treasure hunt clues take Laura to the small closet under the stairs, looking at it more calmly she removes the pipes she left dropped the day Simon disappeared, behind the pipes she finds a door, that door leads to a basement filled with old drawings, she also finds her treasure, Laura finally gets together with Simon who she carries in her arms full of relief and Simon asks her why is she crying, she's just crying of happiness and asks him to close his eyes in order of not seeing Tomas roaming around, both come out of the basement.

image.png

If one sees up to this point it would be a happy ending... but this story isn't happy so if you want to know what happened during Simon's disappearance get ready.

The little room of Tomas that Simon wanted to show his mom was that hidden behind the closet under the stairs, when Laura pushed the pipes and left them lying around she blocked the door trapping Simon inside, he went there after the displeasure with his mom.
The noise Laura heard that night was Simon trying to push open the door and the thud was him falling down the dark basement stairs, that fall broke his neck and caused his death.

When she found him thanks to Tomas, Laura carries a blanket, not Simon covered in that blanket as she thought, she realizes this when right before going back up to get out of the basement she sees the broken railing and a body on the ground, when she approaches she finds Simon's body and judging by its appearance you can see he's been there the last months.

She goes up with the body, takes some pills and makes her wish, the one she earned for winning the treasure hunt, her wish is for Simon to come back, her son alive and well is now standing next to her, and since he also won his own treasure hunt, he wishes for Laura to stay not only taking care of him, but all of the children, all of Laura's childhood friends that were murdered by Benigna, and also Tomas.

Carlos goes back for Laura after the two days she asks to be alone, he finds out he lost his family, he doesn't want to stay there so he takes out all of their things, on his last visit to the empty Orphanage, a door opens, he looks through it and smiles at something we can't see, but it's easy to assume he's seeing Laura and Simon all right.

My opinion

It's a really good movie in which if you get distracted and stop watching a part you'll lose references that will help you understand everything.

It doesn't abuse of jump scares, since the beginning it creates a thrilling atmosphere and it keeps you waiting for a jump scare or a loud sound, and those come when you lower your guard, in moments where not even the music gives you a hint that you're about to get scared.

It's a story without heroes or villains, just persons dealing with revenge and a supernatural world they know nothing about, beliefs and skepticism face each other in a subtle way when Laura as a last resource goes with the Medium, and Carlos believing they're cheaters asks for a psychologist to assist the session, we as spectators can't see ghosts, we don't see what the medium is seeing but we do hear things, voices and cries in a dark environment, those voices could be real psichophonies or an elaborated oax, both Carlos and Laura stand up for their opposite perspectives to the same facts.

In my opinion, the kids's manifestation happens in an great way, Laura recreates the game they used to play as kids outside the orphanage, the one of 1, 2, 3 knock on the wall. When I watched Squid game's traffic light game I immediately remembered this game because players come forward while whoever's at the front turns his/her back to them.

When she recreates this game, Laura knocks on the wall, turns around and nothing appears, the second try noises can be heard, another try and we see a door opened, and the next try we see all the kids, when one of them touches her shoulder she has to chase them, that's how she finds the hidden door under the stairs.

This whole game and that quote of 1, 2, 3 knock on the wall is very known as part of the movie in spite of being seen a short time.

It's a great movie to watch alone or in company, the story traps you and although it seems like a slow movie it's not, is just not like other movies of the same genre where they abuse of jump scares every 3 minutes making them predictable.

The Orphanage's story really catches you and envelopes you in its world.
