Hello dear fellow platform members! My name is Alicia and I am from Caracas, Venezuela. I am fascinated and delighted to have joined this community, because I love to analyze good cinematographic works.

I want to make my entrance to the community, telling you my opinion and points of view about this wonderful piece, both literary and cinematographic, that everyone knows and that I know many have enjoyed, "Gone with the Wind".

lo q.jpg

Gone with the Wind is undoubtedly a priceless piece of cinema.

Based on the novel written by Margaret Mitchell, I can say without being untruthful that the film is a faithful copy of the book. I have the book and I can say it with total clarity. In terms of costumes, scenery, description of the characters and parliaments, this film is identical to the book.

Review

Starring:

  • Vivien Leigh, as Scarlett O'Hara (1913 - 1967)
  • Clark Gable as Rhett Buttler (1901 - 1960)
  • Olivia de Havilland, as Melanie Hamilton (1916 - 2020)
  • Leslie Howard, is Ashley Wilkes (1893 - 1943)

loq1.jpg

Set on a plantation in the south of the United States, Georgia, this piece tells us about an irreverent and spoiled young girl named Scarlett O'Hara daughter of the owners Tara, who is madly in love with Ashley Wilkes, who in turn, is engaged to be married to Scarlett's cousin, Melanie Hamilton, a very sweet and tender young girl.

lo q.jpg

Without caring about her cousin's engagement in marriage, Scarlett declares her love to Ashley, during a party offered at the "Twelve Oaks" house, who rejects her, not realizing that a man (Rhett Buttler) has heard everything, which makes her very angry, because that man blatantly mocked her declaration of love.

lo q.jpg

Soon this party is interrupted by the announcement of the declaration of war and the men at the party decide to enlist. Melanie's brother, Charles, asks Scarlett to marry him before they leave, and Scarlett, scorned by Ashley's rejection, accepts and they marry before he leaves for the war.

Scarlett is widowed when Charles dies while serving in the war and the young woman's mother sends her to her cousin Melanie's house to try to cheer her up.

loq.jpg

Here she raises a flurry of bad blood at her carefree attitude by attending a charity party while mourning and dancing with Rhett Buttler.

Several months later, while the city is under siege because of the war, Scarlett and her maid, help Melanie in labor and later, she asks Rhett to take them back to Tara, because she needed to know about her family. He agrees, but once on the outskirts of the city, Rhett abandons them, deciding to join the front.

Upon arriving in Tara, the atmosphere is desolate. His old house, once beautiful, is now in ruins, the product of looting by the troops. His mother had died of typhoid fever and his father had gone mad.

lo.jpg

Only her sisters, her father and two of her most loyal servants remained in the home: Mammy and Pork.

There is a shocking scene that for me, was iconic and it is when Scarlett, with an empty stomach, exhausted by the long journey, in shock by the events experienced upon arriving home, with her cousin delicate from childbirth and with nothing to eat, goes to the plantation desperate, tired and hungry and with a staggering gait, gets a root of some vegetable that was left there, cleans it and eats it in desperation, and then breaks down in tears, collapsing on the land.

loq1.jpg

Suddenly, she stands up and looking at the sky, with a handful of earth in her hand, she says:

"As God is my witness, no one will never succeed in crushing me. I will live through all this and when it is over, I will never know hunger again. Never! Neither I, nor any of my people. Even if I have to swindle, be a thief or a murderer, as God is my witness, I will never go hungry again."

During those days working on the plantation, Scarlett's father is killed when he falls from a horse while trying to drive an intruder off his land.

lo q2.jpg

On the other hand, Scarlett realizes that despite the hard work on the cotton plantation, the money is not enough to pay the taxes derived from the new Reconstruction laws. Desperate and trying not to go hungry again, the young woman travels to town and meets her sister's fiancé, Frank Kennedy, a wealthy middle-aged man with the money to save Tara, and deceives him by telling him that Suellen had married someone else because she was tired of waiting for him. Scarlett manages to marry Frank.

loq2.jpg

Some time later, Scarlett is attacked by a man while driving her carriage through a village. That same night, Rhett, Ashley and Frank make a night raid on that town to get the man who attacked her and Frank is killed.

Curiously, once the funeral is over, Rhett, a speculative man who only seeks his own benefit and with whom he has maintained a strange relationship of hatred - flirtation, proposes marriage to Scarlett and she accepts without hesitation, but is still secretly in love with Ashley, who it should be noted, from my point of view, is a pusillanimous and cowardly man.

In time, they have a daughter whom Rhett names Bonnie Blue, but Scarlett, still in love with Ashley and angry at the loss of her figure after the pregnancy, adamantly tells Rhett that she does not want to have any more children and that they will no longer share a bed.

lo q.jpg

The marriage between Rhett and Scarlett is not a love nest. Rhett feels despised by Scarlett and frustrated by her unrequited love for Ashley.

One night, Scarlett finds Rhett drunk and they have a fierce fight over Ashley; then he forcibly kisses her and takes her to the bedroom to make love to her.

The next day, he apologizes for his wrongdoing and asks her for a divorce, but she refuses. Rhett then decides to leave the house for a long time. When he returns, she informs him that she is pregnant again, which sparks a new fight between them.

During the fight, she falls down the stairs, suffering a miscarriage.

bonnie.jpg

While she is in bed, recovering from the miscarriage, tragedy strikes. Little girl Bonnie Blue, tries to jump a fence with her pony, but fails, falls off the pony and dies.

Rhett finally gives up and accepts that his wife is still in love with Ashley and that the marriage was a mistake, so he decides to leave for good.

It is then that Scarlett realizes that she has never been in love with Ashley, but that it has been a crazy obsession because he was the only man in town who never paid obeisance to her, and that she is in love with Rhett instead, so she begs him not to leave.

loqe.jpg

But he rejects her and asks her to stop saying that and keep a little dignity.

She insists and tells him that without him, what will she do? He looks at her and says, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." He then walks away, leaving Scarlett crying inconsolably at the foot of the stairs.

Suddenly, she stops crying and says:

"Tara it's my home. I'll go to my house, I'll devise something to bring him back. After all, tomorrow will be another day."

lo q.jpg

Thus, this impressive novel by Margaret Mitchell comes to an end. Rhett returns to his life in Charleston, pretending to forget Scarlett.

Scarlett, for her part, after crying inconsolably, decides that at that moment she cannot think about it, that she will think about it the next day, when she returns to Tara.

It is such a fascinating story that grabs the reader from the very first moment, because of its description, its excellent narrative and its fantastic plot. When it is taken to the screen, you realize the great display of luxury, scenery and photography that this film offers in its almost four hours of duration. In addition to the excellent performances with which each actor gives life to the characters.

I invite you to read the book or watch the movie. Either one, you will love it. I used to read it every Christmas until my son came into the world and the responsibilities that his arrival brought to my life have kept me busy.

But I know I will pick up the book again soon because doing this summary has made me want to read it again.

The images were taken by taking a screen capture on my TV while watching the movie on Blue Ray.
