El día de hoy vamos a comparar dos películas que se encuentran en Netflix, esto se debe aunque traten temas similares, una es muy buena y la otra es horrible. Ya saben cómo es Netflix, saca varias películas sobre el mismo tema hasta lograr aceptar con una. En este caso hablaremos de Sierra Burgess is a Loser.
Today we are going to compare two movies that are on Netflix, this is because although they deal with similar themes, one is very good and the other is horrible. You know how Netflix is, it releases several movies about the same subject until it accepts with one. In this case we will talk about Sierra Burgess is a Loser.

Sierra es una chica con problemas de autoestima por ser gordita, lo que la hace una víctima de bullying sobre todo de Verónica, la chica popular, a pesar de eso, es inteligente y tiene un buen corazón (o eso quieren que pensemos), un día un chico llamado Jamey se enamora de Verónica y le pide su número y ella como es muy mala, le da el de Sierra y así comienza una relación basada en el Catfish, ya que Sierra hará lo imposible para evitar que Jamey se enteré de que no es Verónica, sino, la chica “fea”.
Sierra is a girl with self-esteem problems for being chubby, which makes her a victim of bullying especially from Veronica, the popular girl, despite that, she is smart and has a good heart (or so they want us to think), one day a boy named Jamey falls in love with Veronica and asks for her number and she as she is very bad, gives him Sierra's and so begins a relationship based on Catfish, as Sierra will do the impossible to prevent Jamey from finding out that she is not Veronica, but, the "ugly" girl.

Los tres protagonistas son Sierra, Jamey y Verónica:

Sierra es la protagonista, es una chica que sufre de bullying por su peso, además de que su autoestima esta por el suelo, sumándole que no destaca en casi nada. Pero sin duda, es un personaje odiable, en toda la película, vemos como Sierra engaña a Jamey haciéndolo pensar que habla con Verónica, esto mata todo lo bonito que se construye porque sí, la pareja se ve bonita hasta que recordamos que todo es un catfish y no solo eso, Sierra se encuentra con Jamey por la calle y finge ser sordomuda, pero si eso no fuese suficiente, hay abuso sexual por allí, pero estas cosas fueran perdonables si Sierra se disculpará, ¿verdad? No, Sierra nunca se disculpa por sus actos, solo se justifica porque “ella es fea y por eso su vida ha sido un infierno” y no, ser “fea” no es justificación para hacer todo lo que hizo Sierra en la película.
Sierra is the protagonist, she is a girl who suffers from bullying because of her weight, plus her self-esteem is on the floor, adding that she does not stand out in almost anything. But without a doubt, she is a hateable character, in the whole movie, we see how Sierra tricks Jamey making him think she is talking to Veronica, this kills everything nice that is built because yes, the couple looks nice until we remember that everything is a catfish and not only that, Sierra meets Jamey on the street and pretends to be deaf and dumb, but if that was not enough, there is sexual abuse over there, but these things would be forgivable if Sierra would apologize, right? No, Sierra never apologizes for her actions, she only justifies herself because "she's ugly and that's why her life has been hell" and no, being "ugly" is no justification for doing everything Sierra did in the movie.

Verónica, la chica popular del colegio, bonita, pero muy estúpida. Es la abusadora de Sierra al principio; parece ser una chica perfecta, pero en el fondo podemos verla como alguien manipulable, con baja autoestima y con serios problemas en su casa. Verónica sin dudas es un mejor personaje que Sierra, tiene una evolución típica de un abusador. Comienza porque Sierra se da cuenta que no puede seguir con la mentira sin ayuda de Verónica, la cual manipula para ayudarla dándole fotos, haciendo video llamadas y una cita con Jamey a cambio de que Sierra la ayude con los estudios, ya que Verónica tenía un novio y este la dejó por no ser inteligente, aunque debo admitir que Sierra justo aprovecha que Verónica está deprimida para arrastrarla a su plan.
Veronica, the popular girl at school, pretty, but very stupid. She is Sierra's bully at the beginning; she seems to be a perfect girl, but deep down we can see her as someone manipulative, with low self-esteem and with serious problems at home. Veronica is undoubtedly a better character than Sierra, she has a typical evolution of an abuser. It starts because Sierra realizes that she can not continue with the lie without Veronica's help, which manipulates her to help her by giving her photos, making video calls and a date with Jamey in exchange for Sierra's help with her studies, since Veronica had a boyfriend and he left her for not being smart, although I must admit that Sierra just takes advantage that Veronica is depressed to drag her into his plan.

Y aunque nada de esto justifica ser una mala persona en la escuela, si es más entendible y su evolución es creíble y sentí un poco de empatía por ella, solo un poco, tampoco es la gran cosa.
And although none of this justifies being a bad person at school, if it is more understandable and its evolution is believable and I felt a little empathy for her, just a little, no big deal either.
Jamey es la pobre víctima de toda la película, es un chico amable y un jugador de futbol, una cosa que me gustó es que a pesar de ser un mariscal de campo, no es el típico chico popular, es una persona bastante tímida y aunque este mamadísimo, es una persona un poco insegura y sabe muy poco de las chicas, por lo que, sus consejos de ligar se basan en lo que les dicen sus amigos. Aunque su evolución es muy pequeña, es el mejor personaje de toda la película, Verónica tiene mejor evolución, pero teniendo en cuenta que estuvo en el plan con Sierra, también la metemos en el mismo saco que Sierra.
Jamey is the poor victim of the whole movie, he is a nice guy and a soccer player, one thing I liked is that despite being a quarterback, he is not the typical popular guy, he is a pretty shy person and although he is a blowjob, he is a little insecure and knows very little about girls, so his flirting advice is based on what his friends tell him. Although his evolution is very small, he is the best character of the whole movie, Veronica has a better evolution, but taking into account that she was in the plan with Sierra, we also put her in the same bag as Sierra.

Historia
Story
Personalmente considero que esta historia pudo haber sido mejor si solo se fueran ido por una ruta diferente y tener a Sierra como villana. Me molesta un poco que este tipo de películas románticas de adolescentes no quieran atreverse a contar otras historias. Creo que la mayoría de nosotros nos hemos enamorado de alguien por internet y termino siendo una persona totalmente diferente a lo que creíamos, es algo que pasa muy seguido y aunque esta película toca este tema, lo romantiza y eso es algo que nunca pasa en la realidad y muchos de los casos no termina bien.
I personally feel that this story could have been better if they just went a different route and had Sierra as the villain. It bothers me a bit that these types of teen romance movies don't want to dare to tell other stories. I think most of us have fallen in love with someone over the internet and ended up being a totally different person than what we thought, it's something that happens a lot and although this movie touches on this topic, it romanticizes it and that's something that never happens in reality and many of the cases don't end well.

La historia pudo ser mejor mostrando a Sierra como villana por todos los actos que hace durante la película y Verónica tendría la evolución y se quedará con Jamey, ya que en un punto de la película, Verónica habla bien de Jamey hasta parece enamorada. Esto fuera dado una gran lección, ya que también muchos han sido los que engañar por internet, además de que se enseñaría que ser “fea” no es un justificativo para ser una muy mala persona que básicamente es lo que enseña esta película. Así que ya saben, si se consideran feos y nadie les presta atención, pueden engañar a alguien por internet o destruir la vida de cualquier persona y estará bien.
The story could have been better showing Sierra as the villain for all the acts she does during the movie and Veronica would have the evolution and stay with Jamey, since at one point in the movie, Veronica speaks well of Jamey even seems in love. This would be given a great lesson, since also many have been those who cheat on the internet, plus it would teach that being "ugly" is not a justification for being a very bad person which is basically what this movie teaches. So you know, if you consider yourself ugly and no one pays attention to you, you can cheat on someone over the internet or destroy anyone's life and you will be fine.

Al igual que After y A Través De mi Ventana, tienen parejas y situaciones que claramente no deben ser romantizados, pero igual lo hacen, dando malos ejemplos en vez de simplemente irse por el camino correcto y mostrar que no, así no funcionan las cosas y que la mayoría de los casos termina muy mal. Por otro lado, la película enseña que debemos ser unos mismos y aceptarnos tal cual y como somos, esto estaría bien si Sierra no se pasará más de la mitad de la película fingiendo ser otra persona.
Like After and A Través De mi Ventana, they have couples and situations that clearly should not be romanticized, but they still do, setting bad examples instead of simply going down the right path and showing that no, that's not how things work and that most cases end very badly. On the other hand, the movie teaches that we should be ourselves and accept ourselves as we are, this would be fine if Sierra wouldn't spend more than half the movie pretending to be someone else.

Otro elemento que me molesta un poco es la intimidación, ya estamos en una época en donde ser gordo no debería ser tema de bullying, aunque en esta película se lo tomen muy apego, siento que deberían alejarse de estos temas y en vez de excluir a la gente obesa, se debería incluir y tratarse como a cualquier persona, aunque al final quieren demostrar esto, durante toda la película se la pasan insultando a Sierra por su apariencia y la inseguridad que le crea también es un tema principal en esta película, además, el final… Cuando Jamey le dice a Sierra que él posiblemente nunca se fijaría en ella por su apariencia y creo que estamos claro que la apariencia de Sierra, no es lo más feo que tiene.
Another element that bothers me a little is the bullying, we are already in a time where being fat should not be a subject of bullying, although in this movie they take it very attached, I feel that they should move away from these issues and instead of excluding obese people, they should be included and treated as anyone, although at the end they want to prove this, throughout the film they spend the whole movie insulting Sierra for her appearance and the insecurity it creates is also a main theme in this movie, also, the end.... When Jamey tells Sierra that he would probably never notice her because of her looks and I think it's clear that Sierra's looks are not the ugliest thing about her.

Pero mi mayor problema es que los actos de Sierra no tiene una consecuencia, realmente consideró que es tema muy importante y necesario mostrarlo. Si haces cosas malas, tendrás tu castigo. Solo se justifica todo el mal que hizo con que ella es fea, cuando la actriz ni siquiera lo es. Solo es una chica que para los estándares de hace años es fea, manipuladora, egocéntrica, calculadora, vengativa, aprovechada y condescendiente.
But my biggest problem is that Sierra's acts don't have a consequence, I really felt it was a very important and necessary issue to show. If you do bad things, you will get your punishment. It only justifies all the bad she did with her being ugly, when the actress isn't even ugly. El Body Positive
Netflix ya ha realizado varias películas sobre el Body Positive y está sin dudas es la peor, creo que en vez de hacerme sentir mejor con mi cuerpo, me hace sentir peor. El problema no es el tema que trata, sino en cómo trata dicho tema y aquí el tema apenas y es mencionado, no importa si quitamos este tema, igual la película da un mal ejemplo.
Netflix has already made several movies about Body Positive and this one is undoubtedly the worst, I think that instead of making me feel better about my body, it makes me feel worse. The problem is not the subject it deals with, but in how it deals with that subject and here the subject is barely mentioned, it doesn't matter if we remove this subject, the movie still gives a bad example.

Aunque sea duro, los problemas de autoestima no valen de nada cuando tratar de justificarte con ellos, que Sierra se sienta mal con su físico, no le importa a más nadie, solo a ella y era su responsabilidad trabajar en ello. Hacerte pasar por victima en cualquier situación y no te esfuerzas en hacer un cambio en tu estado emocional, nunca vas a progresar y solo seguirás arruinando tu vida y de los demás. Por lo tanto, si utilizar tus inseguridades para hacerte pasar por victima cuando no lo eres, eres una horrible persona.
As hard as it is, self-esteem problems are worthless when trying to justify yourself with them, that Sierra feels bad about her physique, it doesn't matter to anyone else, only to her and it was her responsibility to work on it. Verónica también es un personaje odiable, peor a diferencia de Sierra, al menos cambia para bien y no, una canción que hable sobre ti y tus inseguridades, no es cambiar o pedir perdón, es más justificación. Aunque al final me quieran meter el mensaje de que lo importante es el interior y que debemos amar tus inseguridades, en ninguna parte sentí eso. Me fuera gustado que Sierra pidiera ayudar (hablo en serio) y aunque sea, ver una evolución y meter un mensaje positivo, pero no. Obviamente todo termina bien, las películas de adolescentes no se atreven a meter algo nuevo, pero bueno, no era de esperarse.
Veronica is also a hateable character, but unlike Sierra, at least she changes for the better and no, a song that talks about you and your insecurities is not about changing or asking for forgiveness, it's more about justification. Even though at the end they want to give me the message that what's important is the inside and that we should love your insecurities, nowhere did I feel that. I would have liked Sierra to ask for help (I'm serious) and at least see an evolution and a positive message, but no. Obviously everything ends well. Obviously everything ends well, teen movies don't dare to introduce something new, but well, it wasn't expected.
