When it comes to versatility there are few genres of series that feel as flexible as comedies, throughout my life I have seen an innumerable amount of projects that try to mix humor with many other styles: drama, action, science fiction ... and which brings us to this post: horror.
When I talk about "horror" in What we do in the Shadows I don't want to be misunderstood, it is not a series that seeks to terrify its viewers or shock them with a murky setting, quite the opposite: it uses these elements to tell a funny story and out of the ordinary. We follow the story of a group of vampires trying to survive in 21st century New York, with all that it entails.
Taking advantage of the recent premiere of the third season on FX, I wanted to take advantage of a couple of paragraphs to this great series created by the brilliant Taika Waititi (which also derives from a film of the same name) and that seems to go a bit unnoticed in the eyes of the mainstream public.

Since its inception, What We do in the Shadows has been an incredibly consistent series, blending perfectly measured humor with a unique visual presentation where Gothic and Victorian aesthetics coexist with our modern society.
Starring a group of brilliant actors: Natasia Demetriou, Matt Berry, Kayvan Novak, Mark Proksch and the great Harvey Guillén, as well as a number of brilliant cameos from the likes of Nick Kroll, Mark Hamill and Taika himself, WWDITS is a show from its first episode and only improves its quality as the story progresses.
The story is presented to us as a mockumentary and although it sounds quite cliché there are few projects that take advantage of this format so effectively, WWDITS definitely drinks a lot from comedies like Arrested Development or the Office but gives it a refined European touch that makes it feel unique.
There are many smart decisions that have led What We Do In The Shadows to be one of the most interesting comedies of our time, this is no small thing considering the wide variety of options that are presented to us among so many streaming platforms and sources in which which we can consume content.
His third season starts with a lot of strength and things just keep getting better and better.

Cuando se trata de versatilidad existen pocos géneros de series que se sientan tan flexibles como las comedias, a lo largo de mi vida he visto una cantidad innumerable de proyectos que tratan de mezclar humor con muchos otros estilos: drama, acción, ciencia ficción… y lo que nos trae a este post: horror.
Cuando hablo de “horror” en What we do in the Shadows no quiero que me malinterpreten, no es una serie que busca aterrar a sus espectadores ni impactarlos con un setting turbio, todo lo contrario: usa dichos elementos para contar una historia divertida y fuera de lo ordinario. Seguimos la historia de un grupo de vampiros que trata de sobrevivir en la New York del siglo 21, con todo lo que conlleva.
Aprovechando el reciente estreno de la tercera temporada en FX quise aprovechar un par de párrafos a esta gran serie creada por el brillante Taika Waititi (Que aparte deriva de una película del mismo nombre) y que parece pasar un poco desapercibida a los ojos del público mainstream.
Desde sus inicios What We do in the Shadows ha sido una serie increíblemente consistente, que mezcla un humor perfectamente medido con una presentación visual única en donde la estética gótica y victoriana coexiste con nuestra sociedad moderna.
Protagonizada por un grupo de actores brillantes: Natasia Demetriou, Matt Berry, Kayvan Novak, Mark Proksch y el genial Harvey Guillén, asi como de un part de cameos brillantes de la talla de Nick Kroll, Mark Hamill y el propio Taika, WWDITS es un espectáculo desde su primer episodio y no hace más que mejorar su calidad a medida de que la historia transcurre.
La historia se nos presenta como un falso documental y aunque suene bastante cliché existen pocos proyectos que aprovechen con tanta eficacia dicho formato, WWDITS definitivamente bebe mucho de comedias como Arrested Development o the Office pero le da un refinado toque Europeo que la hace sentir única.
Existen muchas decisiones inteligentes que han llevado a What We Do In The Shadows a ser una de las comedias más interesantes de nuestra actualidad, esto no es poca cosa considerando la gran variedad de opciones que se nos presentan entre tantas plataformas de streaming y fuentes en las cuales podemos consumir contenido.
Su tercera temporada empieza con muchísima fuerza y las cosas no hacen más que mejorar cada vez más.
