Although its cult status has waned with a couple of seasons of dubious quality, it's hard to deny that Black Mirror was once a vessel for some of the most shocking stories ever shown on television, born out of Charlie Booker's genius vision, this British anthology series showed us the dark side of technology from various perspectives, playing with some genres through time and space.
It's not exactly a new concept, The Twilight Zone for example did the same thing with supernatural elements half a century ago (and served as partial inspiration for this project) but what really made Black Mirror stand out was its singular execution.
However, today I am not here to talk to you about the entire series, but about a very particular episode that sums up all its virtues very well: The Entire History of You.
Directed by Brian Welsh and written by Jesse Armstrong, the third episode of the first season of Black Mirror is one of the most intimate and bittersweet, presenting us with the progressive decay of a sweet relationship at the hands of intrusive technology.
The Entire History of You tells us that in the near future we will have an augmented reality implant that will allow us to record information and reproduce it at any time, having access to a high-resolution digitized version of all our memories. What Liam and his wife Ffion do not know is that this device will be the trigger for the breakdown of their marriage, questioning Ffion's fidelity thanks to several of these recordings.
The point is that despite taking place in the future, there is a painful familiarity in the technology that this short film shows us, which is not far from working like Instagram stories or the images that we all shared on Snapchat a couple of years ago.
There is a fairly simple dilemma: do we live happily in ignorance or do we accept the information that these devices give us?
Black Mirror does not question the morality of technology but how it relates to our human behavior, taking everyday things that we recognize to extremes and putting them on a challenging plane, while telling a story full of characters with whom it is easy to connect. and a very attractive aesthetic.

Aunque su estatus de culto ha decaído con un par de temporadas de dudosa calidad es difícil negar que una vez Black Mirror fue un recipiente de varias de las historias más impactantes que se habían mostrado alguna vez en la televisión, nacida de la genial visión de Charlie Booker, está británica serie antológica nos mostraba a partir de varias perspectivas el lado oscuro de la tecnología, jugando con diversos géneros a través del tiempo y el espacio.
No es un concepto precisamente nuevo, The Twilight Zone por ejemplo hacia lo mismo con elementos sobrenaturales hace medio siglo (y sirvió como inspiración parcial para este proyecto) pero lo que realmente hacia que Black Mirror destacara era su singular ejecución.
No obstante, hoy no vengo a hablarles de la serie completa, sino de un episodio muy particular que sintetiza muy bien todas sus virtudes: The Entire History of You.

The Entire History of You nos cuenta que en un futuro cercano contaremos con un implante de realidad aumentada que nos permitirá grabar información y reproducirla en cualquier momento, teniendo acceso a una versión digitalizada en alta resolución de todos nuestros recuerdos. Lo que no saben Liam y su esposa Ffion es que este aparato será el detonante para el quiebre de su matrimonio, poniendo en duda la fidelidad de Ffion gracias a varias de estas grabaciones.
El punto es que a pesar de transcurrir en el futuro, existe una dolorosa familiaridad en la tecnología que nos muestra este cortometraje, que no dista de funcionar como las stories de Instagram o las imágenes que todos compartíamos en Snapchat hace un par de años.
Hay un dilema bastante simple: ¿Vivimos felices en ignorancia o aceptamos la información que nos brindan estos aparatos?
Black Mirror no cuestiona la moralidad de la tecnología sino el como se relaciona con nuestra conducta humana, lleva a los extremos cosas cotidianas que reconocemos y las pone en un plano desafiante, contando al mismo tiempo una historia llena de personajes con los que es fácil conectar y una estética bastante atractiva.

Me encanta Black Mirror por el hecho de que no necesariamente tienes que ver los episodios en orden. Además de que la tecnología que vemos muy fácilmente podría ser creada en unos pocos años.
Hubo uno en particular que me asustó, donde era una sociedad en la que vivías en base a los likes y a cómo te percibían los demás ¿lo llegaste a ver?

oh sí, si más no recuerdo el episodio se llama Nosedive, me encanta que ese episodio nos muestra un mundo muy atractivo pero termina siendo uno de los más terroríficos.
