There is nothing that I appreciate more than a film where each of its elements is totally focused on achieving the same objective, its photography, its music, each frame that is placed in front of our eyes, each dialogue... Everything exists serving the same reason.
In the case of Whiplash, this "reason" is the search for perfection in its most toxic and pure state, the idea of pushing our human capacities to the limit at any cost, taking us on a journey where the drasticity of our methods does not It doesn't matter if we achieve the goal.
The ironic part? At all times this position on life and the path to success is questionable, we observe the descent into madness of a young drummer, his physical and psychological wear and tear as the days go by, but at the same time he ascends, getting closer and closer to what at first seemed impossible to us.
Although Terence Fletcher, his teacher, might seem like the antagonist of this story, at the end of the day he is nothing more than a catalyst for this philosophy, able to fully exploit the capabilities of the young Andrew Neiman.
I appreciate this ambiguity because it allows us to easily place ourselves in any area of the spectrum, we can agree or not with the methods that are demonstrated on the screen, but at the same time we must admit that they work... Even if the cost is so high .
Beyond romanticizing the obsession, Whiplash attempts to understand it objectively, and as I mentioned at the beginning of this post, there isn't an element of it that isn't implemented for this purpose.
We suffer each practice, each repetition, each scolding and each correction, but we can also enjoy its fruits, superficial but satisfying.
It is a painful and exciting film, something that would not be possible if it were not for the brilliant performance of Miles Teller and J.K Simmons, who want to perfectly portray a chaotic bond between an ambitious student and a teacher capable of doing whatever it takes to exploit that ambition.
Do we celebrate the results or are we outraged by the bitter journey? In the end, that is something that will vary from person to person, the only thing certain is that Whiplash is a roller coaster of emotions, where quality music is a constant and blood is the cost.
No hay nada que aprecie más que una película en dónde cada uno de sus elementos está totalmente enfocado a conseguir un mismo objetivo, su fotografía, su música, cada frame que se pone frente a nuestros ojos, cada dialogo... Todo existe sirviendo a la misma razón.
En el caso de Whiplash, está "razón" es la búsqueda de la perfección en su estado más tóxico y puro, la idea de llevar nuestras capacidades humanas al límite cueste lo que cueste, llevarnos a un viaje en dónde lo drástico de nuestros métodos no importa si conseguimos el objetivo.
¿Lo curioso? En todo momento está postura sobre la vida y el camino al éxito es cuestionable, observamos el descenso a la locura de un joven baterisra, su desgaste físico y psicológico a medida que pasan los días, pero al mismo tiempo asciende, acercándose cada vez más a aquello que en un principio parecía imposible para nosotros.
Aunque Terence Fletcher, su maestro, podría parecer el antagonista de esta historia, al final del día no es más que un catalizador de esta filosofía, capaz de explotar al máximo las capacidades del joven Andrew Neiman.
Aprecio está ambigüedad porque permite que nos ubiquemos sin problema en cualquier área del espectro, podemos estar de acuerdo o no con los métodos que se demuestran en pantalla, pero al mismo tiempo debemos admitir que dan resultados.... Aunque el costo sea tan elevado.
Más allá de romantizar la obsesión, Whiplash intenta comprenderla objetivamente, y como mencioné al principio de esta publicación, no existe un elemento de la misma que no esté implementado con esta finalidad.
Sufrimos cada práctica, cada repetición, cada regaño y cada corrección, pero también podemos disfrutar de sus frutos, superficiales pero satisfactorios.
Es una película dolorosa y emocionante, algo que no seria posible si no fuese por el brillante performance de Miles Teller y J.K Simmons, quieren retratan a la perfección un vínculo caótico entre un alumno ambicioso y un profesor capaz de hacer lo que sea por explotar esa ambición.
Celebramos los resultados o nos indignamos con el amargo recorrido? Al final eso es una cosa que variará de persona en persona, lo único cierto es que Whiplash es una montaña rusa de emociones, en dónde la música de calidad es una constante y la sangre es el costo.

Este es un excelente filme; no podría esperarse menos de un director tan talentoso como Damien Chazelle. Nos presentas una buena síntesis de su contenido temático, y de la relación entre los dos personajes a través de las dos magníficas actuaciones. I originally ignored this film because of the subject matter. it sounded like something that wouldn't interest me. Years later and due to a lapse in anything else to watch I decided to put it on and was blown away. This is an amazing film and whenever I meet someone that hasn't seen it I always encourage them to rectify that situation as soon as possible.

Whiplash was genius work from Chazelle. It's been a long time since I saw the movie but I can remember the overall premise. I can remember the emotions I felt, how conflicting they were and how relatable they felt. This is a movie that does not just happen on screen but in the heart and mind of the viewer. I really feel like reliving the experience again. Great review!

Creo que si el film se hubiese estrenado hoy, recibiría muchas criticas de ofendidos, diciendo que es una apología al bullying, que seria un mal ejemplo para alumnos que son tan débiles mentalmente los de esta generación, que por una película comenzarían a aceptar maltratos psicológicos de sus maestros, etc , etc, etc de solo imaginar la lloradera en twitter me enfermo. 😆 Es un peliculón, excelente película en todos los aspectos.
Coño, todas las generaciones siempre han sido suceptibles cuando películas como esta marcan la diferencia, sí habría quejas, siempre hay quejas, pero sobre todo se hablaría de que a pesar de que pasa en la película, el sufrir aprendiendo no es justificable bajo ninguna circunstancía, profesores así han existido y siempre existirán, ser exigentes es obligatorio, ser una plasta de mierda es opcional.
Claro, aunque eso es algo que en cierta forma el mismo film trata de abordar, lastimosamente para Fletcher solo existe un solo camino a la grandeza y Neiman lo suscribe a pesar de que le cueste su salud mental y física.

Hombre si, y yo en cambio siento que es muy buena la forma con la que aborda el tema, porque acepta que esos métodos tienen sus virtudes y sus defectos, nunca niega una cosa ni la otra.
J.K. se ganó el odio como personaje pero el respeto como actor, joder, supongo que mis ambiciones no son tan altas como para sufrir tanto con el objetivo de llegar a la maestría en algo, aunque sí lo haría con algo, sería un diferente tipo de infierno, pero un infierno que de igual forma se tendría que sufrir. Quiero volver a ver la película, vale totalmente la pena.
Es estupenda, yo nunca la había visto y me encuentro feliz de haberle dado una oportunidad finalmente.
