The menu: A twisted and interesting culinary experience (2022) Review [Eng - Esp]

The truth is that I am not a person so much in favor of consuming content of a tense, scary or dramatic nature and I speak for most of the series or movies that have been made in the last decade, do not misunderstand me I respect and appreciate that others find them exciting or at most interesting, but for me at this point not so much, that's why I shelter more to the idea of consuming this type of content, if in such a case I would call my attention through Japanese animations such as anime and some mangas, and if in such a case I would like to see something stronger I watch movies from that country or from another Asian country, which have a good use and management of the aspect of terror and suspense, it is simply a matter of preference and who knows, maybe in the near future I will bring you one or another movie which incorporates those elements, but we will see since there are several things I would like to bring to you, but in the case of today's movie, I can say that it has a greater focus on tension and drama or black comedy.

So, stepping out of my comfort zone, I asked a friend what kind of series or movie has been so well received recently and he suggested several, but this one caught my attention the most. One of the elements that I found most interesting was the gastronomic or culinary section, taken to a twisted purpose, to see how that concept is combined and that slowly as the plot unfolded everything became heavier, tense and gloomy at various points, It made me remember when I saw the series of Hannibal some time ago and although it is not entirely the same if there are several similarities, but fixed to the photography and ambience you will see what I mean so this time I bring you to the film from the menu.

Synopsis / Sinopsis

The plot focuses on Tyler and Margot, two people who will be involved in a journey that will take them to a specific island to taste a great variety and exotic quality of dishes with the famous chef Slowik in particular. In addition to this, it is also presented that the other people who will go with them and will accompany them, are people of high lineage or wealthy as there are few who have the opportunity to go to taste in that place, but in the journey things will change and take a much more terrifying pace.

I'm not so used to review on topics like this and more if it is a movie, although curiously I feel more comfortable dealing with animated series, so I will base on that principle to do the best possible here, since I do not see so much current content involved in this nature, I can say that the film fulfilled most of the elements that I personally liked, I feel that the idea of terror was complemented in a better way with the concept that gives a great base in this film and it is the gastronomic or culinary aspect or food as you prefer to call it, the idea of how this was handled hand in hand with the interpretation of the main chef and his interaction through his dishes with his diners, was one of the things that I found most interesting, since each dish has an explanation or narrative and personal weight for the chef, since most of the people who are here, feel superior in a way because it is an exclusive event, and expect something outstanding for their palate or innovative.

The treatment or interactions with these people throughout the plot, as well as all the workers who are involved with the chef, either in body language or when speaking makes a big difference, and it is handled very well because as time passes and different dishes are presented the situation escalates, making the atmosphere more gloomy and tense and the handling of those emotions as well as the game of cameras makes it look certainly shocking. On the other hand the interaction of the chef with our Margot is unique, because she is the only one who makes the chef question several times, and besides that in contrast are the diners who will address a particular situation each in their own way, showing a degree of interest and reaction not only with what they eat but with their indirect or direct relationship with the chef Slowik. Another point that I liked was the vision of Slowik, we see that each dish he shows and the way he expresses pride in such work shows us that he is a person who is not only methodical and calculating, but at the same time lacking something on an emotional level and it is here and under this point, which takes on greater weight as the plot unravels, because we will see his twisted vision of things in relation to what he does and why he does it.

Regarding the camera work, setting, lighting and acting I have no complaints, I liked considerably the angle and movement of the cameras at the time of the preparation of the dishes, the process behind each one and the choreography or order in which the chef's cooks moved so meticulously, In terms of lighting, the light and ambiance reminded me of some chapters of Hannial and his series, especially when he cooks or the environment in which things were somewhat tense, here it has a certain similarity with that, overwhelmed by a cold and uncertain environment and a quite interesting precision by the chef and the workers along with a good interpretation and acting work by the others.

In relation to the plot, it comes to have a premise or prelude to what will happen, mistando a good direction on that part, much of the group of characters involved to address this island, are people who have a high purchasing power and a certain influence, some more than others at some points, this variety of both person and their background and interaction shows us the typical direction of a group of people, that go to a certain place in which singular or particular things will happen, the difference and to at least vary at this point is that they do not expect something "bad" that can affect them, although they expect something uniquely different with the dishes, what will come later will make them see things differently, at least in this last point, they showed something interesting, inviting us to an open panorama of various possibilities.

And with this I end today's review, I apologize if I did not express in the best way or expose in a better way my points, with a more constructive and simple approach, but I'm not so used to address films like this with this theme, but well it would be interesting to continue improving at least at this point and take advantage of it for future reviews at least in this section certainly, I can only say in general that the film has its charm and that if you enjoy scenarios in which this is in between, tension, psychological terror, black humor and doubts, this film is worth it, so thanks for coming here and see you next time.

I really liked the film, the whole part of social satire, its setting in the world of haute cuisine. The production design is very good, the design of the restaurant, the style, helps a lot to create that tense atmosphere. The camera movements and of course the performances of the two main characters, the secondary characters follow stereotypes of well seen characters, but I found it a very good movie.
