Hello to you who read this article!

Today I'm going to talk about Black Mirror, the anthology created by Charlie Brooker !

The latter is a British journalist known for his black and acid humor, his way of being satirical and pessimistic, and it is clearly felt in the series. The principle, very inspired by the series The Twilight Zone, consists in proposing to each episode a different scenario, a different realization, a different atmosphere but all the episodes have in link the relation between the technology and the human being.

What? Another popular series that will say "blablabla technology is evil"?

Well... not really, it is much more thoughtful than that.

The series starts in 2011 with 3 episodes for its 1st season:

  • The National Anthem

  • 15 Million Merits

  • Back to Image

For this post, I'd like to give you my analysis and opinion on the National Anthem. Of course... WARNING SPOILERS !!! You have been warned !

The National Anthem

The very first episode of Black Mirror, which starts off dry and already sets the tone for the first viewers: Michael Callow, the British Prime Minister learns via his advisers that the Royal Princess Susannah has been kidnapped and is being held hostage by an unknown man. This man claims a very precise order in exchange for the princess' freedom. Money? Power? No. The kidnapper demands that the Prime Minister be filmed having sex with a pig and that it be broadcast on all British TV stations before 4pm, all in the same day.

During all the episode, the information will have leaked, the government trying at all costs to save the princess while avoiding the humiliation of the Prime Minister, the whole England who begin to develop a kind of unhealthy voyeurism mixed with acrasia (acrasia being a philosophy consisting in doing what one does not want to do and not doing what one does) so that at the end : at the end of the episode, the Prime Minister proceeds in tears this sexual intercourse with a pig and the whole retransmitted on all the British media, in front of the glance of million televiewers. All of London is emptied as almost everyone is inside, watching with disgust but fascination the public humiliation of Callow.

Finally the princess is released, safe and sound. Callow was humiliated, but that's how the princess was saved!

... except that no, not at all.

Indeed, the humiliation happened at 4pm, but the princess was released in the streets of London at 3:30pm and there was plenty of time for a couple and a policeman to come. Why did this happen? It's very simple, I remind you that there is no one in the streets, they are all in front of their televisions. All of them, even the wife of the Prime Minister.

But then, why did the kidnapper want the Prime Minister to have this zoophilic sex? Out of hatred for politicians? Well, not yet. We learn that the kidnapper was Bloom Carlton, a Turner Prize-winning contemporary artist. And the goal was not to harm the princess, but to create a work of art: the unhealthy fascination of human beings with humiliation.

The last moments explain that the princess has overcome the ordeal and has not been affected by it, that some artists are making controversial speeches about Carlton's kidnapping, which they describe as "the greatest work of art of the 21st century", and that the Prime Minister has become very popular and his public life is shining brighter, as he appears with his wife, with a smile. But in truth, it is only an illusion. Because his private life is destroyed; off camera, the relationship he has with his wife has not been fixed, and will never become like before. As a proof, we will learn via an "easter-egg" in the episode Shut up and Dance of Season 3 that the Callow couple divorced.

This episode is dark, sad, cold but unfortunately makes an excellent criticism of this unhealthy fascination to be spectator of events as such. Spectators who scream with joy when they see a fight in front of their eyes, who laugh when they see humiliating videos of victims of harassment, and so on. After all, this is not new, long before today's technology, humans already had this fascination, watching horrible tortures or fights to the death in arenas. So, technology is not entirely to blame, at least, not more than humans.

By the way, funny fact (?): Black Mirror viewers often tell newcomers not to watch this episode because it is disgusting. However, it often happens that these newcomers end up watching it. So, even before watching the episode, this show manages to deal with this subject. It's funny, isn't it?

This was the first episode I watched, because it appeared to me in that order. I'm not going to lie to you, it was too disturbing, especially since they showed the pig scene. I got the message later, but it left me a bit in shock.

I continued watching Black Mirror and it became my favorite, is there another episode you liked?

Yeah, that doesn't surprise me that new Black Mirror viewers watch the National Anthem at first, because they usually think that is a classic serie and everything begin at the first episode !

Of course ! I think my favorite one would be Shut Up and Dance ! It's that one who make me know Black Mirror !
