E N G L I S H

The most common social problems among us can become so serious that we can hurt others irreversibly. The consequences can be terrible and even lethal, that's why we must stop the harassment that sometimes we even unintentionally encourage.

This Spanish film of the slasher subgenre shows us how bullying can be so traumatic for a person and awaken the worst demons. This form of bullying among high school and elementary school students is still latent and growing, which demonstrates the lack of interest of institutions to effectively solve this problem.

Not only will we see this type of setback in "Piggy", where a girl is bullied for being overweight, but we will also witness the behavior of a bully, and what consequences it will bring for the protagonist to take matters into her own hands.

E S P A Ñ O L

Directed and written by Carlota Pereda and starring Laura Galán, this story with a lot of gore and an impossible love tells us the story of a teenager named Sara, who suffers from bullying in her high school by other girls in the school.

Not only is there harassment towards her face to face, but we will also see how they apply Cyberbullying to her, posting photos on social networks about her and her family. A growing hatred is taking over Sara's personality, she is a quiet, shy, and calm girl, who doesn't like to go out much, which is typical of a person who is constantly teased.

I thought the character and the actress's performance were very good, she showed that anger and frustration that she could only lessen by hiding in her room and listening to quiet music. The character's status begins to take a turn when she is introduced to her impossible love; a person she never imagined crossing her path.

While Sara was enjoying a quiet afternoon at a swimming pool, taking advantage of the fact that no one was around, since the shame of showing her body had reduced her to that, the girls who harass her appeared and start assaulting her, then they take her things and she has to go back home in her bathing suit.

Truth be told I imagined much worse things were going to happen, but seeing the actress's signs of anxiety attack seemed so convincing that I couldn't feel anything but remorse.

As she made her way home with what little clothing she had on, she caught a glimpse of someone kidnapping the girls who hurt her. One of them asks for her help, but Sara decides to keep quiet and thank the kidnapper of her stalkers for the gesture. From this point on, the film finds itself in a tense denouement.

I reviewed some reviews that claimed that the protagonist loses her role during this period of the film, and picks it up again until a third of the way through the film, in one part they are right, but the plot is so simple that I don't expect much from it.

Not much else happens during the film, we simply wait for the heroine to face the villain again, but this time with a different face. There wasn't much that connected me with the main character either, I was more aware of the mistakes that were clearly in the development of the scenes.

Despite all this, I noticed that the actress Laura Galán looked very confident and secure, totally focused on the role of a character with self-esteem problems. In an interview, she stated that she did not feel uncomfortable showing her body, and we can confirm this by watching the film, as she always appeared with little clothing.

However, I found it rather contradictory that an actress in her thirties would play a high school teenager, and were there not younger actresses with voluptuous bodies who could play the role just as well? Not, as the director wanted her, and she was right in some respects, but in others, she was not very convincing.

The plot has some good twists, not mind-blowing, but it also manages humor that made me laugh a bit, along with a bit of padding to get to the expected ending. One as a viewer catches at once what is the reflection in the plot, however, we can't guess what will happen later, the director did a good job in leaving us with some surprises.

I found the theme of impossible love within the plot a bit amusing. Maybe we've all had a toxic and unhealthy relationship at one time or another, but when we realize how damaging it is, we turn around and run away or confront it. Here we will find the final girl's fight against the antagonist, typical of slashers, but this time it's not starring a slim, sexy girl, who was very lucky to steal the villain's heart.

To conclude, I think 'Piggy' is an entertaining movie, it has clear mistakes and a too simple plot, which unnecessarily extends to not give it a quick closure, however, it leaves as a teaching a reflection on what can cause the bullying in people suffered by it. It's not a masterpiece, but it has decent direction and the story is good. It has its pros and cons, but that doesn't take away from the good job it does in leaving us with an important message in a very sanguine way.

I quite liked the movie, the actress is very nice, I also saw some interviews, here it doesn't matter the age, she makes a good interpretation and maybe someone more mature and self-confident was needed for those scenes where she is not afraid to show her physique, which will be criticized by many.

The movie has flaws, but that reminded me of the American horror movies of the seventies, which many are now referents and icons of horror. For example The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has a lot of mistakes in its scenes, the low budget was noticeable, etc, but even so it still impresses and is a classic. Many other horror movies were a success despite having many mistakes, continuity flaws, crappy effects, etc. I prefer that kind of movies, they have a certain charm for me.

If I'm being honest I didn't like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, it's one of my least favorite slashers. It's okay to enjoy some scenes, the most morbid ones in fact, but not the whole movie.

The age of the actress playing the role of a teenager may not matter, but it is quite noticeable for the plot. What I liked the most is the way they used this social problem is a good story with an undercurrent of revenge and guilt, where the heroine proves that she is not an evil person in reality.

You are right, many movies have mistakes and sometimes they are absurd, some of them make me laugh actually, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying the movie.

 last year

I've been wanting to see this movie, in fact I have it checked on my list, but I haven't decided because of the gore, I'm not a big fan of gory scenes. However, it has caught my attention, one for being from Spanish cinema, and another, for the central issue it tackles. I think I'm going to give it a chance.

Check it out, it's a lot of fun, the gore thing isn't that strong, plus the rest of the story is good, and it has a good ending too.

Woah this is the first time I am hearing about this film. It sounds like a movie with a unique storyline to say the least. It's clear that more and more writers are getting creative with their stories rather than just recycling the same thing. I just saw two trailers of the film and it looks quite different. I'm not really a slasher fan but this one looks like it has a little bit of psychological horror in it. I may just check it out. Maybe I'd like it too.

Great review!
