Movie Review: Sex/Life

in Movies & TV Shows3 years ago (edited)

With the way everyone kept talking about this series, I really wasn't interested in seeing it. I have a theory that if everyone's talking about it on Nigerian Twitter then it's trash. It's either I stumble on to the movie or tv series myself or I get a recommendation from someone I know. I successfully ignored the constant talk about Sex/Life until Netflix shoved it in my face. I got frequent reminders and it ranked high on the platform's leaderboard. I just needed to get it over with to see what the hype was about.

Sex/Life is a television drama series released last month on Netflix. It's based on the book, 44 Chapters About 4 Men written by BB Easton. It also falls under the romantic genre and is very PG-rated. There are 8 episodes with an average of 45 mins per episode in the first season It stars the trio of Sarah Shahi as Billie Connelly, Mike Vogel as Cooper Connelly, and Adam Demos as Brad Simon.

The Plot

The series starts off with Billie reminiscing her past life of a typical bad girl back in her post-grad days. She met Brad who's a music producer at a club for the first time and there was an immediate attraction between them. He was meant to give her a lift home but she ended up at his extravagant house instead. They then had an intense makeout session that led to sex in Brad's in-house pool.

She awakens to her reality when her baby bites her nipple and brings her back to mommy duties. Her husband, Cooper gets back home from work and looking at him, she remembers all of the reasons she married him. She begins journaling on her computer where she reveals her deepest thoughts about her sex life, reveling in past moments with her old flame, Brad.

Billie's best friend Sasha happened to be the gateway to letting Brad back into Billie's life when Billie runs into Brad at her place. The two had been having an affair of which Sasha never mentioned because it was an awkward situation dating Billie's ex.

Cooper reads Billie's journal and is filled with rage which he channels into trying to reignite the spark in their marriage by having vigorous sex just as she had described in the journal. His efforts never seem to be enough for Billie the sex freak and he goes searching for Brad.

In episode 3 he trails Brad down to the gym, watching him from a distance and is obviously enthralled by the man his wife can't stop fantasizing about. After workouts, he still follows behind as Brad goes to the shower and he watches him unclad, feeling even worse when he sees Brad is very endowed down there.

Still in Cooper's bad books, Billie tries to make him see she currently has nothing to do with Brad and she comes up with the idea of having a double date with Sasha and Brad. They go on the date and Cooper sees right through it, Brad and Billie are clearly still into each other, increasing his fears.

Billie continues reliving her life with Brad in her journal and Cooper keeps reading in detail, trying to meet up. This makes them go to a sex party to spice up their sex life but that backfires when it leads to a fight between Cooper and his colleague which almost made him lose his job.

In the last episode, the couple resolves just after Cooper had a talk with Brad where Brad makes it clear he's given up on getting Billie back because she chooses to stay with Cooper and is happy with him.

The episode ends in a cliffhanger as Billie runs away from a perfect moment with her family to Brad's apartment.

My Thoughts

This was quite a tiring show to watch right from the beginning. Billie's narrator's voice was the first major turnoff. The attempt to sound very sensual was so cringe and forced. The sexual chemistry between her and Brad was one of the worst I've seen on TV. There was absolutely no chemistry especially in the first episode which is crazy because the two are a real-life couple. I felt second-hand embarrassment watching all of their sex scenes.

Billie's breast and butt were all over the place most of the time which is a waste for such horrible acting. I actually can't tell who's the worse actor but Brad is a sorry case. He was too expressionless for the character and the only memorable thing about him is his big penis, the reason why episode 3 is the most talked about.

The storyline is just funny. Cooper trying to prove himself sexually each time he read the journal made me beg him for some dignity. For some reason, he had access to her journal every time. Couldn't she at least put a lock on her computer or something? He was already going through a lot and she kept feeding him the poison.

I doubt I would go ahead to watch a second season because this was a lot to handle. Like I said, if everyone's talking about it, it's probably trash. I wasn't wrong on this one.

If you want to see poorly acted soft porn, then go ahead to watch Sex/Life on Netflix.

I'm glad I had the opportunity to read your view on this, you know I've always believed that this film was tailored for female viewers and they would relate more to the plot of the film. I believe this was done at the expense of most male viewers a majority of whom would be turned off by the story's premise. But seeing now that even female viewers are turned off by the sheer impracticality of the story makes my happy and satisfied because bruhhhhh.... People who write such stories and scripts should go find career paths somewhere else.. A good captivating story is not a story that a minority can relate to it's a story then even though some people might disagree with, everyone can relate to.. I firmly believe that a great story transcends gender, race, class or ideology.. a great story is the story of a collective human experience, one that doesn't excluded anybody. Sadly we don't see a lot of that these day and many of these studios are beginning to fall prey to ideologue scriptwriters in an attempt to be woke.. it's just sad.. thanks for your review though.. I'll be sure to not near this series..

Glad I could deter you from watching 😄

I don't think I'll watch the series, it doesn't catch my attention, not even because it has a lot of sex scenes. I also think that when something like that is very popular among the masses, there's a good chance it's bad hahaha for example the adaptations of the 50 shades of Grey novels, when they were released they were trending on twitter everywhere and the movies are crap .
Although I also review commercial products, I always prefer indie movies and series that are not well known.

The movies almost always never live up to the books.

This one in particular was a bad idea and I wouldn't even want to read the book.
