Advances in genetics introduce another layer to the conversation. Scientists have identified specific genetic markers called single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs)—small variations in DNA—that are associated with perfect pitch. For example, the SNP RS 3057, or the “perfect pitch gene,” has been identified. Surprisingly, testing indicates that many individuals—including the author, his son Dylan, and his daughter—carry this gene variant, although they do not all have perfect pitch. The gene’s prevalence in the general population is higher among Asians and Caucasians than previously thought, indicating that genetics alone do not determine the skill.
