Rommel’s forces, including the 5th Panzer Regiment, maneuvered along the front but faced unexpected resistance from British artillery and anti-tank guns, notably from the 1st Field Regiment Royal Artillery, which ambushed advancing Germans severely damaging their tanks. The Germans also encountered RAF air superiority—British fighters and bombers inflicted heavy losses, crippling supply columns and hamstringing their operations.
