Despite advancing data collection techniques, the researchers acknowledged several limitations. For instance, only about 40% of detected aircraft transmitted their positional information, hindering the ability to pinpoint which flights were responsible for creating visible trails. This limitation significantly impaired efforts to correlate trail appearance with aircraft movements.
To move forward, the study suggested expanded monitoring efforts, including the retrospective examination of existing data to identify potential patterns among the trails and aircraft. Improved hardware technologies, such as high-quality cameras and satellite imagery, were proposed to enhance data gathering and increase sky coverage.
