Following the fall of Rome, the land was invaded by various tribes, most notably the Franks under Clovis I, who in 486 AD, unified much of northern Gaul. His conversion to Catholicism in 496 became a turning point, aligning the Franks with the papacy and strengthening their influence. Clovis established Paris (then Lutetia) as his capital and founded the Merovingian dynasty, shaping the early medieval political landscape.
