Etymologically derived from Greek demos (people) and kratos (power), democracy is traditionally "rule by the people". It involves collective decision-making where citizens possess and exercise sovereign authority. The classic phrase—a cornerstone of democratic ideals—is Lincoln’s "government of the people, by the people, for the people".
However, defining "the people" is complex. Historically, democratic rights were limited (e.g., only male citizens). Modern democracies extend these rights broadly but still grapple with questions of inclusion. The core principle, thus, involves citizens directly or indirectly choosing their leaders and shaping policies.
