The breach was initiated through a third-party software service provider named BeyondTrust, which notified the Treasury Department about the incident on December 8th. Hackers gained remote access to several user workstations, exploiting weaknesses in the software service to obtain unclassified documents. Fortunately, Treasury Department spokesman has assured that the compromised service has been taken offline and that there is no current evidence indicating that the hackers still have access to the systems. As a result, the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) have initiated investigations into the breach.
