In the beginning stages of personal discovery, this individual found themselves at the center of intense scrutiny and pressure, particularly from letters sent by friends, family, and community members urging them to marry. The culture surrounding their life, especially as a member of the LDS community, dictated certain norms that often made singles feel alienated as they grew older. The societal pressure mounted as they approached their late twenties; a milestone which, as articulated by Brigham Young, rendered anyone unmarried by 28 a "menace to society."
