Part 4/8:
The Birth of the Prefab Home Series: Combining Design and Cost-Effectiveness
By 1956, Frank Lloyd Wright had completed designs for three types of prefabricated homes, inspired by quintessential American architectural styles. These homes were exclusively built by Erdman’s company and deliberately prioritized ease of construction and affordability.
The prefab packages included all major structural components: exterior and interior walls, flooring, windows, doors, cabinetry, and woodwork. Homeowners were responsible for foundations, plumbing, heating, electrical systems, and finishing touches like painting. This division of labor fostered a customizable experience while maintaining low overall costs.
