The story begins in 1909 when the Ontario government initiated a design competition to create a new official residence, moving away from the dilapidated old building on King Street West. The competition attracted elite architects, but the project was ultimately entrusted to Frances R. Hex, Ontario’s chief architect. Inspired by French Renaissance castles in the Loire Valley, Hex envisioned a majestic structure that combined European elegance with local materials.
