This deep-sea cartography not only aimed to locate the missing plane but also provided invaluable data about our underwater landscape. Currently, scientists estimate that only 5 to 7 percent of the ocean floor has been mapped in detail. To put that into perspective, we know less about the depths of the ocean than we do about the surface of Mars—a startling reminder of how much remains hidden beneath the waves.
