Despite this, Vietnam maintains a delicate diplomatic balancing act. It simultaneously engages in joint patrols and military cooperation with China, India, Japan, the Philippines, Australia, and South Korea. It allows Chinese warships to visit Vietnamese ports, participates in joint naval exercises, and yet also seeks stronger ties with the United States. For instance, Vietnam has welcomed U.S. aircraft carrier visits in recent years and is considering acquiring advanced U.S. military equipment such as C-130 Hercules transport planes and Chinook helicopters.
