The event was kicked off by Scott Strode, founder and executive director of Phoenix, who reflected on the profound impact that community and sport can have on recovery. He shared his personal journey of sobriety, having gotten sober near Fenway Park, and highlighted how the transformative power of shared activities—like boxing, triathlon, and mountain biking—can foster connections vital for recovery.
“People come in for the workout, but they end up staying for the new community they build,” Scott explained. This emphasis on community is at the heart of Phoenix's approach: creating a supportive environment where individuals don't have to be 48 hours sober to join, but can begin their journey at any stage of recovery.
