Collecting waste is only part of the solution. Copenhagen has also devised a way to turn garbage into a vital resource: energy. The city’s residual waste—non-recyclable trash—is burned at a state-of-the-art waste-to-energy plant, which is not only innovative but also safe enough to be located in the heart of the city. Every day, around 300 truckloads of waste arrive at this facility, where they are incinerated to produce high-pressure steam. This steam drives turbines that generate electricity and heat.
