The challenge begins with the genetic material stored in the frozen zoo—primarily skin cells. Thanks to recent scientific advances, these cells can be reprogrammed into pluripotent stem cells. These stem cells have the potential to transform into any cell type, including sperm and eggs. The ultimate aim is to generate fertilized embryos that can then be gestated in surrogate mothers, specifically Southern White Rhinos, which are still alive and capable of carrying pregnancies.
