Personal Journey and Field Experience on the Greek Island
Four years prior, Essam and his wife traveled to Lesvos, a Greek island at the epicenter of the Syrian refugee crisis, to contribute to relief efforts. They encountered countless children fleeing danger—children who had endured unimaginable horrors.
It was during this mission that Essam experienced a stark realization: the focus of humanitarian aid predominantly addresses physical needs—shelter, food, and medical aid—while mental health often remains neglected.
This neglect has led to alarming levels of trauma among refugee children, to the extent that experts have coined the term "human devastation syndrome" to describe the severity of PTSD in these vulnerable populations.
