Leland illustrates these principles through the example of Pratham's "Teaching at the Right Level" initiative in India. Although children were enrolled in school, many struggled with basic literacy and numeracy. Pratham observed that grouping children by age was ineffective and instead adopted a methodology based on their actual skill levels. This simple but innovative shift yielded remarkable results—within just 50 days, children learned to read.
Further, by partnering with the Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) and governments across Africa, the initiative scaled. The ambitious goal: reach three million children over five years. This example exemplifies what happens when proven strategies are listened to, adapted, scaled collaboratively, and approached with a long-term vision.
