Part 4/7:
CAR T-cell therapy, or Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell therapy, is a living immunotherapy that harnesses the body’s immune system to fight cancer. The process begins with drawing blood from the patient, isolating T-cells (a type of immune cell), and then infecting these cells with a specially engineered virus containing instructions for creating chimeric antigen receptors.
Once modified, these re-engineered T-cells are infused back into the patient’s bloodstream, where they travel throughout the body, targeting and killing cancer cells. Because they are living cells, they continue to hunt and destroy cancer long after the infusion, providing a potent and personalized attack against the disease.
