The phenomenon of disinformation isn't new; it has deep roots stretching back decades. Camille emphasizes that before 2016, manipulation campaigns from countries such as Russia, Iran, and China were largely peripheral topics. However, these countries have long invested in information operations aimed at influencing foreign audiences.
For instance, Iran had been running fake accounts targeting the US long before Russia became a focus. Similarly, China used these techniques during recent protests in Hong Kong to influence public perception. Disinformation efforts are diverse and often driven by state actors, but it's important to recognize that non-state entities, including private firms, also engage in misinformation campaigns.
