Ectogenesis refers to the development of a fetus entirely outside the human body, in artificial wombs or biobags. Currently, partial ectogenesis is already in practice within neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), enabling premature infants—sometimes as early as 21 weeks gestation—to survive outside the womb. These advancements demonstrate that nearly half of the gestational period required for healthy human development can be conducted outside the mother, opening the door to the possibility of full-term artificial gestation.
