To further augment surgical visualization, systems like Firefly provide specialized imaging capabilities. Firefly relies on shining near-infrared light into the operative site to excite Indocyanine Green (ICG), a fluorescent dye injected into the patient. When illuminated, ICG emits a green glow, highlighting blood vessels and tissue perfusion that are otherwise invisible to the naked eye. This technique functions like night vision for surgeons, illuminating critical structures such as blood vessels and lymphatic pathways, thereby reducing risks like bleeding or inadvertent vessel damage.
