The effort is spearheaded by experts like Mark Finney, who leads the Fire Behavior Sciences Team at the Missoula Fire Laboratory. Finney’s team includes around 15 specialists dedicated to deconstructing how fire interacts with its environment. The project was initiated when Jason Forthofer, a mechanical engineer, successfully demonstrated that understanding the ignition behavior of a pine needle could be translated into a model capable of predicting fire spread.
