Part 5/10:
From Temporary to Permanent Change
A key attribute of tactical urbanism is its flexibility. Projects are intended to be temporary, which provides cities with a low-risk way to test new ideas and gather community feedback. If residents approve, these initiatives can be scaled up or made permanent.
Take Jersey City, for example. With a rapidly growing population, the city faced challenges related to pedestrian safety and bike infrastructure. Street Plans was brought in to facilitate the quick implementation of protected bike lanes using temporary setups over a single weekend. The city then monitored the results, made adjustments, and finalized permanent designs within a year.
