Just hours after securing a second term as mayor of Cold Water, Kansas—a town with fewer than a thousand residents—Mayor Jose Sabios was taken into custody. Attorney General Kris Kobach charged him with six felonies: three counts each of voting without being qualified and election perjury.
The crux of the case revolves around Sabios's citizenship status. Legal investigations claim he is a citizen of Mexico living in the U.S. legally—likely on a green card—yet he allegedly voted multiple times in federal elections, specifically in the August 2024 primary, as well as the November 2022 and 2023 general elections. Because non-citizens are explicitly prohibited from participating in elections, these actions constitute a serious breach of election laws.
