The government shutdown, the longest in American history, caused widespread turmoil—flights canceled, first responders unpaid, and millions of Americans suffering. For weeks, Democrats held firm, demanding extensions of Obamacare subsidies and other policy wins. However, eight Senate Democrats ultimately broke ranks with their party and voted alongside Republicans to end the shutdown, leaving the Democrats with a hollow victory.
The final vote tally was 60-40 in favor of ending the shutdown, with the deal mirroring what Republicans initially proposed before the shutdown began. Essentially, Democrats inflicted pain on the nation for nothing, and in doing so, they only reinforced their political error: they closed the government and gained nothing in return.
