However, even with this skepticism, there's a phenomenon known as automation bias that can influence officers' decision-making processes. Automation bias occurs when individuals place uncritical trust in automated systems, leading them to accept the output of such systems as definitive. In the context of facial recognition, officers might see that the system has processed millions or billions of images and has identified a suspect with high confidence. This can create a cognitive shortcut, leading officers to give disproportionate weight to the system’s identification.
