Part 8/13:
Contractual obligations play a pivotal role. Notably, many sports contracts are written with specific clauses about where games are broadcast—be it ABC, ESPN, or other channels. The legal language around these often stipulates particular obligations, such as live broadcast requirements, audience guarantees, and minimum viewership thresholds.
The SEC, for example, might enforce contractual language demanding certain games or content remain on ABC to satisfy local affiliates or regulatory requirements. Should Disney decide to shift much of this content elsewhere—say, to ESPN+ or other streaming services—it's likely to face legal and commercial hurdles. The same applies to other sports leagues like the ACC or NBA, which may want assurances about where their games will air.
