A significant point of contention was the characterization of Yasuke, a real historical figure who was an African brought to Japan and who served under the warlord Oda Nobunaga. Ubisoft described Yasuke as a "real-life samurai" of African origin, claiming he was enslaved by the Portuguese and impressed Japanese leaders with his strength. However, historians point out that there is scant evidence to support the idea that Yasuke was trained as a martial artist or a swordsman, and much of the narrative is speculated or romanticized by activists and media. The limited historical record about Yasuke’s life leaves considerable room for creative reinterpretation, but the game’s portrayal has been accused of distorting facts to fit a modern narrative.
