Back in June 2022, the studio behind Halo, 343 Industries, faced criticism for a June-themed cosmetic item that referenced Juneteenth, the holiday commemorating the end of slavery. A secondary color palette included a worrying reference: "bonobo," a term for a type of endangered ape, which was seen as inappropriate and offensive. The studio issued a public apology after the backlash, but it highlighted the ongoing struggle with creating culturally sensitive content.
