Interestingly, the Western support has been less about Ukrainian nationalism per se and more about countering Russia's cultural and political reach. This support has led to the marginalization of pro-Russian figures like Viktor Yanukovich, despite his pro-Ukrainian stance, emphasizing instead a Western-defined dichotomy: pro-Ukrainian versus pro-Russian.
