Mdani’s public persona presents a curious dichotomy. On one hand, he is on record as a fiery socialist who draws inspiration from Soviet-backed anti-colonial revolutionaries, denounces Zionism, and advocates for the confiscation of private property. These historical positions seem substantially at odds with his current campaign focus on “free stuff” and tax reforms aimed at making the wealthy shoulder a bit more responsibility.
