Part 4/11:
Many viewers have criticized the episode for its shallow characterization. The Doctor, portrayed by Ncuti Gatwa, is reduced to an overly emotional and somewhat ineffectual figure. His moments of tears and self-pity lack gravitas, rendering him unable to be perceived as the resolute hero fans expect.
Companions and other characters fare no better—Rose Tyler's cameo is minimal and lackluster, and the new characters are introduced with scant backstory or motivation. Ruby's supposed importance hinges solely on her mysterious powers, which are never convincingly explained or demonstrated. Her transformation from an ordinary person to a significant figure appears abrupt and unearned.
