Character portrayals are equally perplexing. The witches—who are supposed to be exiled, powerful practitioners of dark side magic—are depicted as inept and illogical. Their fortress is in disrepair, built into a mountain with cracks and rubble everywhere—calling into question their craftsmanship and the credibility of their civilization. The absence of male characters, despite the mention that the planet was built by men, adds to the skepticism about the ecological and social coherence of the setting.
